Working while going to Nursing school

Is it realistic to believe that you can work while going to Nursing school?

Yes. It is. And many Nursing students who are single mothers end up working a FT job while going to Nursing school. I plan to get my CNA license this summer so I can work as a CNA while in Nursing school.

I had the same question on the intensity of school and if it survivable with a job. I would be working.part time I worked throughout most of my college classes but I wasn't sure how intense the actual program classes will be

While I am not in Nursing school, I have heard that it is super intense. If you don't have any children or major responsibilities to support, I would only go work part time (at MOST 20 hours per week). Nursing school is like mini-med school in ways: super intense and grilling.

It is possible! I worked full-time during my LPN-RN program, and am proud to say that not only did I get through it, but graduated with a 3.9 GPA. It requires a lot on your part though- be willing to utilize your spare time to study/do assignments, including during your lunch breaks at work!, and sacrifice some of your social life. I had a very supportive husband who picked up a lot of slack at home as far as childcare and housework was concerned, and don't feel your home has to be the model of cleanliness! It was hard and stressful, especially when you are in the clinical heavy portion of it, but the end DOES come! It is totally worth it, especially as I passed my NCLEX last week. Good luck to you! If you want it, you can do it! :D

Thanks for the sesponse. I have a wife and 4 kids so I have to work. I am also taking a cna class so i have a back up plan for income.

Hi all-

I'm about to turn 30 and realized its time to stop being scared! I want to be a pediatric nurse but havent made the leAp because I keep hearing how close to impossible it is to work full-time and pursue a degree. Not jus time but financially... If anyone could share their experiences I would really appreciated it.

This is the only site you will find people regularly advising people to work full time while going to nursing school. Of course, this is cataclysmically bad advice. The thing is, people who try to do this and fail never come back and tell their story on allnurses. They just go get some other job and go on with their lives.

It depends on your program, but working part time while going to nursing school is very doable. However, it is still pretty dang challenging.

Good luck.

I received my CNA certification last Fall and I am taking a CNA II course this semester. Many of the higher paying CNA jobs around here only hire Nursing Assistant II's. Hopefully I will work this summer full time and also get accepted into Nursing School (praying hard). If I am accepted, I will try to work part-time. I am a single mother and I need that income to support my 2 year old daugther. I believe I can do it just as long as I stay motivated like I am now.

of course, working fulltime and going to nursing school is possible! that is what i did, and i made it to the finish line! im now studying for the boards i will be taking end of this month!

if i can do it, anyone can, too! :))

It just depends on how rigorous of a program you are going to be in. I know the school has told us that you can pretty much only work 20 hours max a week.. The program i'm in is 8-4 everyday, and sometimes later during clinicals...

well, i was able to finish my program. it's not depends on the program, it depends on the person. if you know how to properly manage time, you'll be fine. doesn't matter what your school says, they don't run your life, you do! teachers just guide you but the ultimate person who can make your plans happen is only you!
