Work part-time, Volunteer, go to Nursing school and a be class leader? Am I crazy?

When I start school in the fall, I will be a second year nursing student in an associate degree nursing program. I have done well the past three semesters. I have been a few points away from an "A" every semester, but alas, I have been getting B's, oh well. But the point is, my study habits are working. I am in the night porogram, whcih means I have class M,T,W from 530-930 and have clinicals from 0630-1730 every other Saturday and Sunday(so the whole weekend every other week)

My second semester I was asked by the Director of the program to basically be a class president. Technically me and another girl (she's day program, I am night program) are considered "class coordiantor's". My friend an I organize fundraisers and volunteer work, we (along with others) help out the first years in the lab, contact the Hurst review people, organize graduation and pinning....it seems like more work than it actually is.

I am also starting a part time job (24h/week) at the local hospital as a Nurse Aide 2. Thankfully my manager is very flexible with my schooling.

Now, call me overly ambitious, but I want to volunteer once a week at a public health clinic in the fall.

Here is my dilemma, I want to make myself as attractive as possible to future employers. I know in order to get hired in the FIRST place, I have to pass nursing school and the NCLEX and the only way that will happen is if I have enough time to study.

My question is, what do you guys think? I have no kids, am not married and the bills I do have to worry about are manageable. I won;t really have any down time, but it will only be for ten months....

Is there anyone out there who has worked, volunteered and gone through nursing school and passed/ Any advice?

Thanks!

I am my class president, part-time nurse tech, red cross volunteer, and new Dad to a beautiful baby girl who is only 11 days old! I am getting ready to start my second semester and I have already been planning and gearing up for less sleep as I study with my little girl. Who knows maybe she'll absorb some of it and become a nurse as well someday!

Advice? Don't really have any except for remembering to ask your classmates for help. I have relied upon several of my classmates and have delegated some projects like a monthly newsletter or contacting local companies for fundraising. I know without their help I would have trouble keeping my head above water. Good luck to you!

Not many ppl can multi task, if you guys can, why not. As long as you guys know how to manage your time I don't see any problem. I, on the other hand, would never be able to do that many things at once. I have so much respect for you guys!!

I am trying to accomplish about the same thing. I don't begin my nursing classes unitl Jan, but I work 24 hrs/ week and I am also a hospice volunteer for a visiting nurse association. i am not sure if I will be running for any type of class officer position, but well see how it goes. good luck to you guys!

First of all, congrats on your baby girl!

I think you hit the nail on the head though, I have no problems delegating, but I have so MANY problems delegating :uhoh3: lol Does that make sense? I can delegate, but the problem is I know when I do it, it will get done right and on time. blah....I guess I am gonna have to learn to let go and delegate some of the less important things to others I can trust...Thanks for your advice! Good luck to you as well!

Yup...delegation. Plus, if you're remotely like I am, things get done better and faster when you're busier. For instance, I am ALL ABOUT kicking butt and taking names when I am getting my rear end kicked with things to do because I have to be on top of things.

lol...I have noticed the same thing about myself!!! When I don't have enough to do I am like "oh...this can wait till tomorrow..." :lol2:

I'm doing just about the same thing. 20-24hrs/week at a local hospital. 2hrs/week for volunteering, 4hrs/week for volunteering in a research lab. taking 3 required courses along with 3 elective courses (22 semester credits). I think I'm a little less than yours but my schedule is literally packed.

I took my first year only for nursing classes, no activities, no job, nothing. It was horrible. I was too free. I can't concentrate. But when it comes to a lot of work. You can't digress or procrastinate. You will be like: hell, if it's not done now, when will it be done? Keep it up. Get yourself enough sleep tho :nurse: :)

Best,
