Work from home nursing jobs

I am looking for a new area of my career and interested in working from home. Do any other nurses work from home and have any ideas, suggestions, types of good home based jobs they could share? How do you like working from home as opposed to working hands on patient care or administrative work?

Depends on your background and level of education. I've worked as a full-time faculty member in an online program since I got my MSN.

I used to work from home as a utilization review nurse. I worked for an insurance company that dealt with workers compensation cases. In my experience, I sometimes felt like I was literally chained to my desk. I was being monitored on every phone call and on every movement of the mouse. I was expected to open and close a certain number of cases and all of our stats were listed and sent out to every person in the department to see. Working from home has its perks but it really depends on your employer. It's not as enjoyable when you are micromanaged. If you can find one that is more focused on quality of work rather than quantity of work, then maybe you'll have a better experience than I did. However I did enjoy my commute of waking up from bed and walking down stairs to my office.

Thank you for your feedback! I would love to stay home and work but not under those circumstances. I will keep exploring different opportunities.

My wife works from home in utilization review but it is very flexible. She picks our kids up from school, runs out to the store etc. More production based rather than hour based.

Many large companies like device manufacturers have employees that work from home. Medical complaints, product advice, etc all tend to work from home.

I knew a nurse that consulted with a law firm from home. She would read charts and basically summarize them in human speak for the law team and point out anything odd to them.
