Hello...I am currently a nursing student and I am planning on applying for a nursing internship. Unfortunately, I do not have much work experience. Would it be okay for my to list volunteer experience (I currently volunteer at a hospice center) under 'employment history' as long as I specify that it was on a volunteer basis? Thanks!

I would say yes. I always list my volunteer experience. As you said, just make sure you specify that it was volunteer work. Most employers are interested in the whole person and the fact that you've found something constructive to do with your time (especially in the health field) is a huge plus and speaks to your character. Good Luck!

You can list it, but be sure you make it crystal clear that it was volunteer work. There is always a chance that the internship may call them to check out your "employment" at a place, thinking you were a paid employee...and if the person they speak to doesn't know you're a volunteer, they may tell the internship "no, she's never worked for us" and then you'll have a mess to straighten out.
On the same note, when it comes to providing contact info for the hospice you volunteer at, be sure the use the name and number of the volunteer coordinator or your immediate supervisor that you volunteer under. Don't list HR or the main number, as you run the risk of having the call end up at someone who doesn't know you and tells the internship "no, never heard of her."

I think it is best to list your employment experience and volunteer experience under separate headiings. Resumes that list the two experiences separate show that the employee is being honest, direct, clear and concise. Whereas resumes that combine the work and volunteer experience together can seem as if the employee is trying to appear to have more work experience then they actually do.
good luck with your job search
