Wondering if I should go into the military?

Published

I'm going to be a sophomore in high school this year. I know I'm going to be a nurse when I grow up, but I haven't decided if joining the military is for me. If anyone has been in the navy, army, or air force I have a few questions. What are the living conditions like? How often do you move? Where are the bases located for each branch? What kind of nurses are the branches looking for? Thank you for any information you can give me.

Hannah, your questions are very broad, but I will do my best to reply. I was enlisted in the Army before, so I can really only generalize about the other branches of service.

Generally, you will move every 3-4 years. Different branches vary in their ability to place you where you "want" to go. Remember, you are at the needs of the (Army, AF, Navy).

In general, if you're a nurse, you'll be living off post in a private apartment or house unless you're married with dependents. You get a housing allowance for this.

From what I've heard, psychiatric as well as critical care nurses as well as nurse midwives are the key fields right now.

My advice to you...join because you want to serve your country. Not because of the money. Your displeasure will happen quickly if you're getting into it just for $$.

You can get lots of info by talking to your local recruiters. Have any visited your school lately?

If you end up decied to become a military nurse look into ROTC.

Thank you MURunner86 that information helped. I was also wondering if anyone has experience as a ROTC. If you have been in the ROTC program would you please explain what it is and how you get in.
