wondering about charity hospital status

Hello - I am an RNC in West Monroe, La. and was wondering the status of Charity hospital in NO. I have always wanted to see the facility. I am an ER nurse, and have heard the stiories about the hospital from residents.

It has been such an amazing hospital, whether you are a patient or staff, or police officer w/ a GSW. I have always wanted to see it's history, and of course I have waited too long, since Katrina. If anyone has any information, I would love to hear about it. Next time I wont procrastinate about something like this, because it seems that I have missed my chance.

To all you ER/Trauma nurses that worked at Charity ER, you are amazing!

Charity Hospital is now just a huge vacant building. It's very surreal to see it now, when just 2 years ago the place was busting at the seams with people. It does not look like this hospital is going to re-open. I can't tell you how profoundly the loss of this facility has affected healthcare in New Orleans. The indigent and uninsured of this area have nowhere to go. The med students, residents, nursing students, rad techs, etc. that received such valuable training at this facility no longer can. The long standing belief around here has always been, if you can work at Charity, you can work anywhere. Sorry you were never able to see it, there is no other place quite like it.

I did my undergrad clinicals there years ago. You are correct; Charity was the place to train for all.

A few of the lights inside of Charity were on over the Mardi Gras weekend. Weird. I think the city is still debating about what to do.

Thanks to you guys for the input regarding Charity. ItsybitsySpider - you are right. I pray for those of you down in that area. New Orleans will not be the same without "Big Charity" as it used to be in its finer days. Even if it is rebuilt, it just won't be the same.

The trauma bay is up and running and is state of the art! hey have added a trauma icu which is also high tech and things are beginning to move in the rest of the hospital also.

A lot of our nurses came back because there is no place like home -- Charity and New Orleans. The patient population is certainly there for us and a lot of evacuees have come home -- a lot were just waiting for Charity/University to open for business.

Although, we still have a long way to go at least I know feel that the light at the end of the tunnel is not a train!
