UW Oshkosh Acclerated Online October Cohort Applicants?

U.S.A. Wisconsin

Published

Anyone out there applying to the UW Oshkosh Online Accelerated program? I applied and am excited to hear if I got in! I'm worried about the expense and intensity, but at 40 years old I don't want to waste any time getting to that BSN, which is my ultimate goal. I live in Wisconsin but 3 hours from Oshkosh so it won't be a quick commute for the on-campus weeks.

Just hoping to connect with other applicants while we cross our fingers and wait!

Hey Jilajila ~ Good luck with getting into the program! I hope to appy to the Accelerated program at UW either for the May or October 2010 cohert. I've heard it has gotten pretty competative to get into. If you don't mind me asking... Did you have CNA experience when you applied to the program? Also, did you have a pretty good GPA? I'm still working on raising mine and really hope I get in next year!! Hopefully we'll both be accepted at some point! again, I wish you the best at getting in! :heartbeat

Hello:

I am just starting the May 2009 cohort at UW-Oshkosh. The money thing is a big worry but they are great about finding resources to help you. I recommend getting volunteer hours in and looking into local organizations. AND... apply to a junk load of scholarships. Seriously look into everything. I still have to come up with $8000 to make the tuition but I have applied to over 30 scholarships and I am starting to get the responses. I am hoping you get in too. Though I do not think that it is as high selective as they say because there is one woman that got in, that I know she hates, I mean hates online classes. So I am positive for you. As long as you made it to the phone interview I think that you will be ok. If you want to talk more just shoot me a message back!

Oh and make sure you have that CNA experience. BIG, BIG, BIG especially the experience should be in nursing home care!!!!

Oh Erica, I'm so glad you replied! I've been dying to talk to someone in the program. I had my phone interview today and it went very well. I agree with you about it not being as competitive in terms of numbers. I do think I have a good chance I'll get in. I have a good GPA but no CNA experience. However, I just got on the nursing assistant registry and start at the nursing home near my home this week! So by the time I enter the program, if accepted, I will have had a few months of experience. It's the same place where I did the clinicals for the CNA class so it'll be a little familiar anyway. And my daughter volunteers there playing piano once a week too.

So anyway, the cost if the most prohibitive thing for me. I have students loans from my other degrees so I am worried about sinking further in debt. I have a good credit score and don't have other debt besides our house, but I really could use some scholarships or something. Are you having any luck with that?

Congrats on getting in the May cohort. You'll be hard at it soon! Do you have a family to balance during your schooling as well? I do, but my husband is very supportive of my going back to school.

Thanks! I hope you are able to get in as well. I have a 3.6 GPA from my last degree (MS Biology) but just starting a CNA job this week. No other experience in that area. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I am able to get in the program. Good luck with your application process!

Good luck to you all ! i am in the may cohort as well. ( Hi erica :) there are over 120 applicants for your cohort so i guess i consider that fairly competitive and one of my roommates at orientation said she was told she was given priority because she was a strong second applicant so if you don't get in apply again but that also means that it affects your chances if there are a lot of 2nd time strong applicants. The one thing i noticed is that we all have very diverse backgrounds so there isn't one thing they are looking for. there are a couple of our group that don't have cna experience but most do(and several have higher skill levels). i also had to apply twice and there were several of us that did (and i know some applied more than once and did not get in) , the one thing i learned is they don't really look at you if your taking classes over the summer for the october cohort unless there aren't qualified applicants that are all the way done. for our cohort they only had 85 apply but october has become the more competitive cohort but truth be told if you have kids MAY cohort is the way to go. we actually do get a few weeks somewhat off throughout the program and for me they line up exactly with my kids spring and christmas breaks which is awesome and something i was not expecting at all. anyway just wanted to share the little i learned this past weekend and good luck to you all!

Hi RN~ THANKS for the info.

When you say they don't really look at you for the Oct Cohert when you have Summer courses left to complete.. Would you recommend completing the courses before I even apply? I won't be done with my prereqs until after Summer '10, so should I wait to apply for the May '11? I'm not sure what will look better and I guess I don't have anything to lose by applying. Any advice would be helpful!

Good luck starting the program and keep us updated on how you like it!!!!

I would definately apply ! I have to run but i will pm you with some other info later but even if your taking classes in the summer apply because you might get in and secondly if you don't then you are just going to be that much stronger of applicant the second time around!!

Congratulations to those of you who are just starting! :) I'm just finishing up (from the May 08 Cohort) and you are in for an intense and exciting year!

Cari- it seems like forever ago since I was thinking about applying...but I remember also being told by the advisor for the program that those applicants who already had everything COMPLETED at the time their application was submitted would probably be prefered (and that CNA experience was weighed a bit). I was originally going to apply for the Oct 07 corhort but actually held off because I was still taking a couple pre-reqs that spring semester when the application was due and was just starting my CNA job and she told me my application would be stronger for May of 08 then (so I ended up getting in the first time I applied). If you have questions though, she really is helpful! Her contact info can be found on the CON's website here: http://www.uwosh.edu/con/undergrad/accelerated.php However, like RN said, it can't really hurt to apply...

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you guys have about the program...and for those of you just starting, you're going to love it (most of the time)! ;)
