winthrop hospital position

Hi there,

I've been working at Winthrop since April. Which unit will you be working on?

I will be working on 6 Hoag pm flex.I just wanted to know about the orientation,will I work my preceptors hours,how long the orientation is usually,I dont have that much hospital experience.How are the staff,do they basically get along or are they miserable?I had worked at southside for a short time and everyone on days was so uptight from the time the shift started until it ended.I just would like some basic information.Thanks

The whole reason I went to Winthrop was for the orientation. It's longer than most hospitals. I was on orientation from the beginning of April until the end of July. It can go longer if you're not ready to go on your own. I work on 3 North so I can't really speak much about what Hoag 6 is like except that it's a pretty busy medical floor. The nurse educators at Winthrop are wonderful. The first week is all classroom stuff where the hours are 8am-4pm if I remember correctly, you don't actually get to your floor until the second week. You will work 7am to 3pm for about two months before you go to 12 hour day shifts. When you work 7-3 you will probably have a different preceptor every day because the nurses work 12 hour days 3 days a week. When you go to 12 hour shifts you will have the same preceptor and follow her schedule for a few weeks before they send you down to nights. Also, you cannot go to 12 hour shifts until you pass the PBDS test. They make you take it once at the end of the first week of classroom training, then if you don't pass it you have to take it again in a few weeks. (Do a search of the forums here for PBDS to find out more about the test, it's difficult and most new nurses don't pass it the first time).

No, you don't. You get paid for them but have off.

Hi LaminyRN,

I was browsing AllNurses for a Winthrop thread and yours is the first I saw. In your response to a user you mentioned that you have been working at Winthrop since April 2007 (ish). Are you still at Winthrop? If so then that is a great sign for me. I was just offered a position. On the interview they had mentioned that they had just let go of one of their new hires though. They also mentioned that they had a hard time finding preceptors to precept the new RN hires. This made me feel a little uneasy. I have 5 months of ICU experience, but I will be switching to Winthrop because I was offered a position in the area which I have always wanted to pursue. I am very hardworking and easy to get along with, but the two little details that I've just mentioned about my Unit are making me uncertain. How was your experience during orientation and during the weekly meetings? I got an ICU job fresh out of Nursing School so I feel like those 5 months helped me tremendously. But I'm not sure any new hire will be happy on a unit where the preceptors don't really want to precept. Yikes.

I was also interested in going to apply to winthrop, i currently work in the ED of a busy level one in nyc, the commute is killing me and winthrop would be awesome. My wife had our daughter there and was impressed by the L&D staff. curious about starting salary, benefits...i heard no union but are the nurses protected.etc etc. would love to hear anything since i cant find out much from the website.

I have two friends who have been working at Winthrop for more than 10 years...what floor/unit are they offering the job on? They both worked on a few different floors over the years and we all know NURSES TALK - so they might be able to give me some info even if it's not their unit.
