Wilmington area - psych position?

Published

Hello all you Wilmington area nurses.

I will be a new RN grad in May 2006 and my husband loves the Wilmington area. We are currently in Goldsboro. I am interested in a psych position, but not quite sure where I would want to look first in that area. Any advice and / or opinions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you!!!!

I am moving to Wilmington too! I was just there last week, and I think there is a psych facility at New Hanover called the Oaks, or something like that. I saw job postings for nurses there. Wilmington seems like a great place! I fell in love with it fast! Good luck with classes!

Specializes in OR, Hospice.

My mom lives in Wilmington and I love it there! She had surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center back in December and I was very impressed with the hospital and the nursing staff. I wish I could work there! Its also has Magnet designation, which is given for excellence in nursing. Definitely check it out!

I moved to Wilmington about 4 years ago. I work for a Substance Abuse Hospital here in town. We of course employ nurses, but the pay rate where I am for nursing positions is somewhat less than standard. Your only real psych nursing option would be the Oaks, at New Hanover, unless you wanted to work with Dually Diagnosed populations through a company like Homecare Management Inc. the Psych unit at NHRMC and Cape fear were merged to create the Oaks which is inpatient psych still just located in its own building.

New hanover is THE game in town. They bought up the other hospital (Cape Fear) and they own some of the physician practices as well. My Partner worked for them for 4 years in CMTU. He liked it ok there. That particular floor has issues with retention. But other areas are not so bad, NHRMC is a LARGE facility and with that comes corporate characteristics as usual. I plan to work there after graduation until I can get some experience under me and travel.

My parents live in Goldsboro and that's where I went to HS and believe me it's vastly different here than in Wayne County. I used to work at WMH in admissions too once upon a long time ago.

Anyway, Wilmington is a great little town and The Oaks would be a cool place to work I think. Best of luck to you in the future ;)

Dear ChadleyNC,

Thank you so much for your information! This site has really been great for discussing and finding out about area information; yours has been especially helpful. That is too funny you are from Goldsboro, it is still a cesspool if you are wondering. I appreciate your taking the time to respond to my post. Thanks again!
