I been hearing this debate off and on for a long time about how if Obama gets universal healthcare to go ( if he gets elected of course)though in the US that nursing pay will be cut dramatically. I would think this has to do with the fact that we would all be working for the government and that there will no longer be competition. There are many people in my nursing class that said they will leave nursing if thats the case. I also talked to several doctors that said the same thing about medicine in general. Im just curious if anyone has some good info about this. Thanks
Helping voluntarily is one thing forced with the threat of jail time is quite another. How do you think UHC is going to be implemented? Do you think everyone is going to paying $50/month for great health care? Allowing the U.S government to control 1/7th of the U.S. economy is just plain crazy.
I in no way believe that my neighbors should pay for my illness. I do plan ahead, I save for retirement, I put money into FSA, I pay my bills months ahead, and I save money; heck, myself and my husband have one car and we utilize biking and public transportation to save money. We don't have cable TV. We don't have children because we couldn't afford to pay my medical bills if we had a baby - and it breaks my heart. We live in a small condo and do all the maintenence ourselves to save money. We haven't gone out to eat in years - literally. So don't even try to understand where I am coming from. Its hard paying over $1000 per month for medications alone. And I chose to work rather than take the easy road on the disability train. My illness has nothing to do with compliance, or diet, or lifestyle; I just happened to be one person out of a million that got dealt bad cards at birth. Is it your fault? Nope. Is it my fault? Nope.
There are holes in the "safety nets" you are speaking of. I don't know you and you don't know me, so please don't imply that poor planning rests on my shoulders. Bad things happen to good people and no one is invincible. And contrary to your belief, medical bills can run $100,000+ for some patients and just because someone has private health insurance doesn't mean that they will pay what is owed.
While I try to respect others opinions, I disagree with your mindset. It is our responsibility as human beings to help one another - its what sets us apart from animals. Help also comes in many forms. There are some of us who do what is right because its the right thing to do, and then there are others who do things because they have to, or because they get paid to do it.
Ever notice tha Obama is long on ideas but short on how he is going to pay for them all? He never offers any details just "hope and change". Last I checked they don't take "hope and change" down at the supermarket.
What does that have to do with anything I said?
BTW, I don't hear any great plans coming from McCain about how he's going to pay for perpetuating our presence in Iraq.
Why does everyone always demand that government-provided healthcare has to be universal? Why do we never see proposals for free healthcare for families of 4 making less than, say, $14000/year?
If you can afford to pay for your insurance, through your employer...why would anyone with any sense think you need to have that expense removed from you and placed on the populace of the country? Or even worse, fully on the employer?
Anytime anything is FREE* for everyone, it's going to be taken advantage of. And, the quality of the product is going to go down.
No one wants to see people dying when care is within reach. But, if the government is subsidizing crap for people with the ability to buy it themselves, it becomes patently ridiculous, and yes...socialistic.
I think what your not getting here is that there are plenty of individuals and families that make too much money to qualify for Medicaid/state programs but are either not offered health coverage at work (or it's too expensive) or earn too little to afford private health insurance. This is especially true for dental and vision services. 80% of all uninsured Americans are not "freeloaders;" they work and still do not make enough money to cover access to adequate healthcare.
How many of them own 2-3 cars, 3-4 flat screen TVs on cable or satellite, a desktop PC and a laptop, both hooked up to high speed internet, and run their electricity bill up to $400/mo due to running their A/C 24/7? Oh, and let's not forget the $200/month for smokes and $200/weekend spent at the bar.
Find a way to hold everyone accountable, and I'll jump on your UHC bandwagon.

How many of them don't and still can't afford healthcare? How many couples have you seen in LTC get divorced so that one can actually qualify for government assistance? I have seen it a few times...
That's ok with you? Show me how everyone is being held accountable now and I'll stopp supporting UHC.

The difference is, the one's that aren't being held accountable NOW aren't getting into my grandkid's college fund.
And, as I said in another post in this thread, I would support providing free care for people under a certain family income.

Yea they are, you think prices for 'healthcare' go up for no reason. Every freeloader causes prices to rise. Just like shoplifters and bootleggers cause prices to rise...
Just because you don't see the monster doesn't mean it's not there. The ostrich approach is hurting our country and our healthcare...
