Hello everyone! I'm currently working in an acute care setting at a hospital and working one day a week at an outpatient psych clinic. I don't really enjoy my hospital position even though I value the experience. However I really enjoy my outpatient psych job which pays $10. More an hour. I have an opportunity to leave my hospital position with 9 months experience under my belt for a full time position at the outpatient clinic and this opportunity won't be available if I wait around to meet my 1 year mark at the hospital. Its so difficult now for nurses and I know I'm in a great position whatever I choose I'm just concerned leaving the hospital could negatively impact my career with only 9 months experience. I have always wanted to be a psychiatric nurse and eventually a psychiatric NP. I tend to follow my heart more than logic sometimes. I leave my psych job everyday feeling like I contributed and had a positive impact I want to continue with that vs the hospital where I feel like all I do is run around so busy that I truly don't have enough time for patient care. Any opinions at all would be appreciated :) THANK YOU

If this opportunity is your gateway to the career field that you want, I don't see why you would be worried about leaving the hospital job. Be sure to follow the policy for resignation - adequate notice (usually 2 weeks) and formal notifications. If not, you will end up being categorized as "not eligible for rehire" and this IS a very bad thing that will show up in the future.
In your resignation letter, be sure to thank your manager for giving you a chance - point out how much you have learned and how wonderful/suportive s/he has been. Explain that you are leaving to take advantage of an opportunity to transition to the first step towards your ultimate career goal.
Best of luck to you. We need great Psych nurses.
