Will LPN/LVN be phased out?

Published

I am just wondering others thoughts on this subject. I am currently a LPN working on my RN. However, ever since I was in school for my LPN I keep hearing how eventually LPN's will be phased out. I think financially this would be a hard thing to do for hospitals and other facilites. Any other thoughts on this?

Don't see it happening. They are just too valuable.

Hi,

I definetly agree - I don't think phasing us out would be something affordable - especially here in Ontario where we depend so much on government funding. What I see happening up here is RPN's/LPN's are actually earning more and more responsibility...treatmeant, meds etc., that used to be RN responsibilities....but we're cheaper. The rumour in my town is that they're going to lay off a bunch of RN's to hire RPN's. Too bad for them, but good for me!

I can't see it happening either. LPN's are an essential part of the healthcare team. In the office that I work in, my doctor told me he had no need for an RN. Said he would only ever hire an LPN. That's good for me!

I'm a pre-RN student (still working on my pre-reqs) and I thoght about just going for my LPN since it's less schooling, but I'm sticking with the RN. Anyways, I've noticed more and more LPN's and CMA's at doctor offices. I swear that I see more of them than I do RN's. Maybe it's just the doctors that I go to, but since I've been in school, I've really noticed this a lot more.

They will never be phased out.........But we will continue to talk as if they are for many more years....................

I doubt they will be phased out, especially in LTC.

However, I have a friend who just passed LPN boards and was told there were no positions available in our hospital, and she's having a bit of trouble finding a position. If she had her RN, she'd have no trouble finding a job. But there are lots of LTC and LPN positions available in this town, so she won't starve, she wants to work in a hospital because she's been a tech in hospitals for years.

This question is as old as the ADN vs BSN question. It's been discussed for eons and given that baby boomers are getting older and sicker, no they won't be phased out.

I think it depends on the inidividual hospital and what type of nurses they use. My hospital has a total of almost 1500 RN's, but only about 50 LVN's. The model of nursing that our hospital uses is primary nursing care throughout.

But I can't imagine LVN's being phased out. They are just too important to the healthcare delivery system.

I don't think the LPN will ever be phased out. But, I am noticing that more and more hospitals are only hiring LPNs for outpt centers and only using RNs in the true hospital

It's smart that you are getting your RN. It will give you a great deal more options, plus better pay for the same work! At my school, the LPN program was eliminated, mostly due to the fact that the local hospital only hires RNs. So the phase out has already well underway in my town, but I think that it will take quite some time as LTC is still predominately LPNs. Corporations are savvy, they know how to get the most for their dollar!
