Hi,
I am a 20 year old student in college and am thinking of becoming a CNA.. However I know that I will need a background check.. When I was 18, I did something that I regret badly and got myself a misdemeanor theft charge. I was never arrested and the only thing that had to be paid was court costs but it is still a charge. The judge never gave me anything else and basically just told me to stay out of trouble.. Will this affect my wanting to become a CNA? I don't want to apply to this course that costs $525 alone and pay a $92 background check and drug screen to only be denied.. I live in North Carolina.
Thank you.

It will affect you. Most hospitals/health facilities will not even consider you if you have a criminal background. Try to get your record sealed though!

Go to your state board of nursing (or cna) website to get more info. You can also call them and speak to a live person. For RNs, a minor charge may require you fill out some additional paperwork, but shouldn't prevent you from obtaining a license. Good luck.

check out your school criminal background requirement. It should state in details the type of charges that disqualify you. go to the link below ( page 17) so you can just get an idea, this for Ohio not sure about your state. But again talk to your school advisor and read the school policy.
