Will I be able to work?

Hi all,

I just submitted my application to LPN school. Of course I won't hear anything until I take my NET exam,but still everyone cross your fingers!

Anyway, I am applying to a ten-month program,and was prepared for the fact that it will be very intense and that I wont have any income for those months..of course I'm worried sick about paying my bills,but I don't realistically see how I could work and go to school five days a week for seven hours a day.

I've made enough mistakes in my educational career to know that I have to prioritize,and my schoolwork is the most important thing.Especially since I'm paying my own tuition this time. But,I have seen threads about students who are working at the same time..obviously in clinical settings,not at walmart or anything. But not knowing anything about this,should I work? Will I be expected to by my program? Thanks.

You will not be expected to, and whether or not you should depends on your finances. Yes you can do it but it will not be easy. And you most certainly should not work full time if you can possibly help it. Good luck.

I think it will depend on your finances. If at all possible, try not to work. Going to school, especially in an accelerated program, and all the studying you will have to do is not going to make it easy to work.

If you have to work, maybe part time on the weekends? Here's hoping you can manage to live cheap, eat beans and rice, buy 2nd hand, and not have to work. That is what I did when I was in my LPN program. A year of utter poverty, but I prefered it to working while I was in school.

Work the minimum amount of time you need to pay your bills. I had to work full time because I was single. But I worked at a Pizza Hut because I liked the hours and it paid the bills (barely).

If you have to work, you just have to work.

Check around on this site because there are a lot of threads on this topic. Many people do work in other fields, like Walmart, while in school. I guess it depends on your finances and your feelings about getting into debt. I financially could have quit work but didn't want to lose a whole year of income. Good luck with whatever you decide.
