Will hospitals hire new grad RN's who are over 40?

Published

I'm a good student, but I'll be pushing 44 or 45 when I get out of Adn school. Will hospital even consider hiring a "new" nurse who is that old? Anyone graduated at this age and got a job? I was over at the hospital and I remember seeing a group of new nurses being taken on a tour of the hospital and they were all about 22. Thanks.

One of our hospitals here said the average age of their new grad nurses was 43 I believe it was. Through all my clinicals I would say at least 2/3 of the nurses I saw were mid 30's-50's. I have worked at 3 of the 4 hospitals here. I think you should be fine. Most of the woman in my class are in their 30's and 40's

why would age make a difference? The young ones get married, have babies, spouse transfers---all kinds of reasons why people leave jobs.

BTW, I did not start nursing school till age 45. I said START. Never a problem getting hired.

You probably have a better chance, since you've had a lot more work history and will be able to produce great references. I also get the impression that in most medical situations, age is an advantage as perceived by the patient. Just an observation.

Great thread. Sets my mind at ease more. I will be 41 starting my pre-nursing classes this summer. I've always wondered what the job market was gonna be like. I have many years of finance behind me, even some college credits in finance. So I dont have any medical work history but plan on taking a part time job whenever I start my nursing classes as it will be the only class i have during that semester (thinking optimistically). And if I dont get in the nursing program this time around, I'm gonna get my LPN. I'm not giving up or sitting around and waiting for the next round.

Thank you for starting this thread! I am a new grad at 43 and am panicked at interviewing period but my age and my lovely new grey hair (it won't dye) cause even greater anxiety. These posts have put me at ease :)

You're looking at age as being a negative. In some ways it's a positive. You are bringing more life experince to the table, you are probably past having more children, are probably settled in your living arrangements and have experience in the workforce.
