Will having a Bachelors degree will bump up my spot on the waiting list?

Published

Hi all, I am applying to Solano community college for nursing this year. I have already turned in the application and transcripts, just waiting the 15 days until i can make the counseling appointment. I am graduating with a degree in Health Education this December and I have heard that some schools take into consideration having a BS. Has anyone been in this situation or have any info they would be willing to share?

Thanks!

I think you'd have to talk to that admissions office (or someone from the program) to get the straight answer. Admissions processes at all schools are so different it's hard to know what will influence your chances. At the CC I applied to, ONLY the required courses are included in your GPA calculation. Most of my bachelor's credits and my entire master's degree, didn't count at all.

Congratulations on getting your bachelors! What an accomplishment! You should consider applying to your nearest university for your BSN! I am sure that alot of your credits are in the nursing pre reqs! :nurse:

I don't think that obtaining your Bachelors has any weight when it comes to acceptance into an ADN program. The CC in my area has an Accelerated ASN program only offered to applicants who have already obtained a non-nursing bachelors degree.

An ABSN program is not an option for you?

When I took anatomy and Physiology the first time i foolishly took them at the same time along with calculus thinking I would do well in any of them (what a fool I must have been). So I had to retake the classes. A lot of the BSN programs as well as the CCS here want a 3.0 science GPA and I am at a 2.8, most also penalize for repeats in classes so I already have strikes against me for the 2 repeats. The only ABSN option anywhere near me costs like $60,000 for the program and also requires the 3.0 GPA. So I am stuck with a few options left. I am willing to wait if I have to in one of the long waitlists because I am already working in the hospital as a CNA so I can just continue getting experience but I am just looking to see if anyone knows of any schools that take a BS into consideration.

You can also head over the to "Region" tab and find your state. There is a discussion on each state's nursing program. Good luck on your search.

Heylady,

I also have a BS in Health Education but it doesn't do me a darn bit of good when I am attempting to get into the ADN program at my local community college. Sad to say but true. All the community college cares about is the select classes that they base your GPA on and any specific number of credits and perhaps scoring from your admissions test. We are in the same boat! I have to share that this nursing stuff is way.... harder that it was for me to complete my BS in Health Education!

Thanks Living on Faith,

I had my prereqs done before starting the Health Ed degree and now I really wish i had jumped on waiting lists before starting it. I really dont know if I am ever going to use my Health Ed degree. Have you done anything with yours?

Have you tried looking into Napa? I have a few friends who have been turned down for the past three yrs at Solano. I heard american river in Sacramento is easier to get into.
