Hey!
REcently took a prn position with a new hospice near my home, great folks, all about the patients, really a great crew and I love it there. $28/hour, 44 cents a mile (going up to 48 cents a mile in january), they gave me a message beeper that works out great, keeps everyone up to date-nurses and support staff alike.
Just got back from an interview, they are seeking a full time person to do
home hospice visits. Same pay as first hospice plus health and dental insurance, $50/month cell phone stipens, although 35 cents/mile is pretty low.....
Question is the second place said I couldn't work PRN for the first place.
Is there a law or something that states this? I really don't want to leave the first place, they are a great crew, and really, they've only been open 2 weeks, and they can't afford me as a full time person right now...
I appreciate any thoughts on this. I mean, I can see in marketing, they don't want you to take your customers with you....but in healthcare?

the agency i work at has a "policy" that says full time people can not work prn for someplace else....makes no sense to me, if i were you i would talk to the prn place and see what they can do for you, the second place may turn out to be nothing but trouble!!
they've only been open a few weeks, and I don't think financially they can take me on as a full time employee.
about the "trouble" part...when I called about the position she said she wanted to "groom" me to become the administrator of another location they are opening the first part of next year. she seemed quite personable (she is the administrator and an LPN, which seems encouraging because i've never worked at a facility where an LPN was in a management position).
thank you for your input. I didn't get it, and really I still don't, and frankly, what I do on my off time is really none of their business, as long as i'm not trying to pull patients from their service to my prn jobs service.
thanks again!

Some places would see it as 'conflict of interest', or working for the competition.

I was always under the impression that they can't depend on you to cover for anyone if you have a second job. I was told that when I was hired as a CNA @ a place where you weren't allowed to have another job. If you really pushed it (which I did), you had to fill out paperwork with the other employers name, type of business, address & phone number. They made it very clear to me that this job came always had to come first.
Another argument (the one they'll probably give you) is pt safety. Some places feel if you're moonlighting @ another job, you could be too tired to safely take care of patients @ their facility.
they really didn't give me a reason. I've always worked at least 2 jobs, pulling 60 hours a week. i've done this for 10 yrs. Of course, I have the luxury of a retired husband that does all the cooking and cleaning, etc. (he is truly a blessing, or i'd never be able to work like I have over the years).
nothing but trouble!!
I am concerned about this, I was thinking the same thing. The hospice part of Health***** was bought out by gent**a, and there is already a health***** location in said city she was saying they were building another location, I think she meant a free standing hospice, as there isn't one in that city.
I will give it 6 months, and if i don't see them prepping me for said administrator position, i'll look elsewhere.
since census and budget cuts at my hospital, i've been looking for a change since november.
truly though, I hate the thought of leaving the new hospice place. my first IDT meeting with that group...the 1st thing on the agenda was "what can we do for our patients and families for christmas." now THAT is heart.
I got an email from a pulmonary group I interviewed with on dec 6th, i've been offered a position on weekends, rounding a couple of hours before the doc gets there, making sure labs have been drawn and on chart, and doing the SOA part of the SOAP note..... I'm passing on the hospice that wanted me to quit the other hospice.
This way I can work the weekends w/lung group, and do during the week with hospice.
yea!!!!!!!! and you know I NEVER would have even looked if my hospital hadn't gone way over budget by buying another hospital and taking on a 5 million dollar expansion............ and i am not depressed anymore too!

The Hospice market is very competitive. This is not unusual practice at all and is considered a conflict of interest.

Hello,
i wanted to ask a question and I do not know how to post it as new so I hope it is not impolite to jump on this post??? (I am pretty ignorant when it comes to posting and such)
I wanted to find out if any of you knew of travel agencies that offer Hospice positions? I would like to do a 13 week in the Cape Cod area for family reasons. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
