Hello,
I am currently finishing up my pre reqs at San Antonio College and am hoping to apply to UTHSCSA in the Spring to start next fall. I have a good paying job now and make really good money, but I kind of want to start working in the medical field before I finish nursing school so that I will have some experience. I'm really interested in surgery and even if I get a Unit Secy. job on the surgery floor I'd be happy with that, basically to get my foot in the door.
Does anyone know which hospitals in San Antonio are flexible with work schedules? If I get into UTHSCSA it's basically like a full time job (Monday - Thursday, 8-5). But I need to work at least part time and they don't offer classes over the summer so I could work full time over the summers.
Any advice is appreciated - thanks!!

I think that you will find that Unit secretary is not an 'entry level' job. Since the advent of CPOE, they are no longer totally focused on processing physician orders; they often have high-level accountability for operational processes.
The most "flexible" positions would be the ones that are specifically designed for nursing students. Most of the time, they are called 'patient care technician' (PCT) or something similar but require at least one semester of clinical training to be eligible. Health Care (the only people who engage in "Medical" care are physicians.... the rest of us work in Health care) is a 24X7 business, so there are usually lots of opportunities to work hours that will not conflict with your school schedule.
Good luck on your application to UTHSCSA (my undergrad alma mater!).
Thanks!!
