Which Med/Surg unit is best for a new grad?

Published

Hello everyone!

I'm a new grad that's interviewing for multiple positions. I've been offered to interview at these 3 places:

Acute/Inpatient Rehab

Medical/Surgical Renal

Medical/Surgical GIGU

anyone here worked any these units before and know the pros and cons to them? I would like a general education my first year as nurse and then maybe specialize...

Specializes in Hospice.

My vote is for the rehab unit.  You will get more exposure to a variety of patients. My first year out of school, I worked on a Med/Surg Tele unit PRN for a few years, then transitioned into the PACU for a few years.  If you go straight into GI or Renal, you're kind of specializing yourself.  Just my two cents.  Best wishes to you and your career!!  Please update us and let us know what you chose.

Specializes in Occupational Health Nursing.

Never heard of a GI GU unit, but I'm imagining lots of bowel prep and CBI. Personally, I would pick Acute/Inpatient Rehab.

Specializes in oncology.

Pre and Post op GI is very interesting (IMO). Working with patients who need an accurate diagnosis (bowel obstruction, PUD, volvulus, etc) and then post op.... Wound care, Pain control,  Respiratory care, prevention of DVT,  Nutrition, Fluid regulation, hydration and urination, discharge planning....all are so important. You will work with every system. Just my 2 cents,
