Where to Live-Williamsburg/Newp.News...

Published

Hi all!

I'm in MI right now working with my husband as an engineer in the auto industry. He's looking to get transferred to Williamsburg area & I'm going to go back to school to become an RN. I'm wondering where we could live that is somewhat affordable (since we'll lose my salary for a while). He will either be in Williamsburg or Newport News.

Any suggestions?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

You might have difficulty finding housing in terms of apartments in Williamsburg. There are a lot of subdivisions in Williamsburg. Better luck would be Newport News. Drive to and from is fairly reasonable.

You can check this site out for neighborhoods in Williamsburg (http://www.ci.williamsburg.va.us/). For apartments..go through the online apartment sites like www.apartments.com, www.rent.com, or www.apartmentguide.com.

Good luck...I'm from in between Richmond and Williamsburg and I go to W'burg and Newport News for shopping.

There are many apartments in Newport News, and rent houses if you're able to to that as well. If you can live in Williamsburg, go for it. It's a college town, a bit more pricey than Newport News but there's less crime, nicer area.

Riverside School of Professional Nursing is in Newport News as well.

The Denbigh/Stoneybrook area in NN is nice, there are many others. Do a little research and if you have any questions - shoot me an email!!

And have a good day.

Do you know where you will wanting to go to school? That may be a critical factor.

If you are interested in schools in the Richmond area, you might want to live in one of the small towns in between Richmond and Williamsburg. Then both you and your husband would each have a reasonable commuter -- him driving south Williamsburg and you driving north to Richmond.

If you are interested in schools in the Norfolk area, then you really should consider Newport News. That way, your husband would commute north to Williamsburg while you commuted south to Norfolk.

There are 4 RN programs in the Hampton/Newport News area -- but you might want to at least look at the ones in Richmond and Norfolk as well to give yourself the most options to choose from. Each school has its strong points and its weak points.

If you have kids and you like public schooling, I highly recommend York County or Poquoson schools. One of the first things I heard when I moved here (from a NN cop with kids in York Co. schools) was that you don't want your kids going to public school anywhere but York Co. or Poquoson. York Co. is varied. Some parts are very rural and some are suburban. Our choice was easy. We bought a 3BR TH in the Coventry development in Tabb in close walking distance from Coventry Elementary, which was rated most highly of all area ESs (talked to lots of parents, too), and when the housing market looked like it was about to tank, sold to rent another 3BR TH right around the bend. The market is in a phase where the housing inventory is rising, but asking prices have not yet substantially come down. After a while, we'll buy a 4 to 5BR SFD nearby. This will take patience. If you're browsing online, the main developments in this small local area are Running Man, Tabb Lakes, and Coventry, all good. Poquoson has a nice small-town atmosphere. Recently many NASA employees have made it home. It's far too vulnerable to hurricanes for my tastes. Isabel really tore it up. I'm zoned X for floods (pretty much no risk, and we were safe in Isabel) but I buy my flood insurance anyway. This year's supposed to be bad for hurricanes.
