Where do I go from here with EC?

Published

Ok, I finished my LPN license. Passed my NLCEX without too much trouble (though I swore I failed after it stopped at 85). I work in oncology/hematology and enjoy being a LPN but look forward to moving on. I decided to take a six month break that is now coming to an end and I need some advice...

I know I have a lot of pre-reqs to get done. I can take like five as CLEP. I think Psych, Sociology, English Comp, Algebra, Humanities and Growth & Dev. I know I needa a bunch more like A & P I will probably have to take through a local college and their information literacy and a few others.

Is that basically all I should focus on for right now? How many of the NC can I do before enrolling? Thanks for your help! Hopefully, RN here I come :)

PS I'm trying REALLY hard to avoid TCN.

Personally if I were you, I would sign up through CC and take English, Sociology and Developmental Psych, algebra and Humanities on line. You could have it all finished this year. This will give you an idea of what self study is like. The online stuff will have deadline but you will get the idea. If your determined, you probably could clep out of it all of it but will it burn you out to study alone for 14+ test including nursing courses. For me I am motivated but It gets tiring trying to complete one exam after another. You just have to decide how you want to tackle all these subjects.Good Luck with what ever you decide.

! would apply and let them tell you what you need rather than just start taking stuff you might not. They let me slide on A&P. Don't know why, and I'm going to take it after the CPNE anyway, but don't end up doing unnecessary coursework.

I agree with Sue -- let Excelsior tell you what you'll need rather than guessing. They might give you credit for some of your LPN coursework, too.

As an LPN, you can only do the first nursing exam without enrolling (the Essentials of Nursing Care: Health Safety exam); LPNs get to skip the second exam (Health Differences), but you have to enroll before the third one (Chronicity).

If you like TCN's material, you can usually find the study guides for sale on eBay for much less than you'd pay if you signed up with them. I used their study guides for a couple of my Excelsior exams (A&P and Micro), and the material was good. But I also used textbooks and other study guides for my studies; I like lots of resources. :)

Good luck!!

Do you REALLY think they would do that? A&P is such an importanat course to have and Roxyg4l sounds like she doesn't have ANY prereqs at all. It also sounds like she is being wise and trying to knock out some general ed courses B4 enrolling in Excelsior and paying additional enrollment fees each year.

I think it depends on the LPN coursework. I think it would be best to speak to EC about having transcripts evaluated; seems to me that THAT would be the wisest way to proceed, rather than taking courses that aren't necessary.

Just my opinion, of course. YMMV. :)

As I said, they let me. I don't know why.

So did you have a structure and function class or something? I will wet my pants if they don't make me have it.

How long ago was your last LPN class?

Noticed a question about how long ago last LPN class. EC accepted my courses from years ago (like decades). That is one of the advantages of EC. I haven't noticed on their site if they have any time limits in place now, other than, nursing classes won't be accepted if they are more than five years old.

Yeah, they accepted credits from 1990/1991 for me. :) They accepted credits from the 70's for one of my coworkers doing the RN to BSN.
