Where are the CNA jobs in NYC?

I am in the process of taking pre-reqs before applying to an ABSN program, and I took a CNA course in December. My plan was to work as a CNA while I finish up classes before starting an ABSN in spring or summer 2013. My dilema - I can't find a CNA position in the NYC-metro area to save my life. In fact, there don't seem to be too many positions available when I search online. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also open to taking another health-related position. I left my full-time marketing position in December to focuses on classes. I have 1 more course to take and another year until school would start (I need a job badly!). Help!

Of course could be wrong and have no way of knowing this but here goes.

Several NYC area hospitals and quite a few nursing homes have closed over the past three or four years displacing not a small amount of nursing staff including UAPs. Those belonging to unions such as 1199 often get first "dibs" on any openings at another facility represented by the same shop. When you add to this many hospitals are barely hiring staff it can answer some of your query.

The other "problem" for nursing assistants is that many acute care hospitals are moving towards nursing primary care models that have the RN doing most if not all patient care unassisted by support staff. That or the UAP staff is minimal and often spread thin. That is you could have a few NAs doing everything from patient care to acting as sitters.

Though not everyone's cup of tea you might try contacting agencies for home help work.

If anyone's interested, NYP-Cornell is currently looking for "nursing companions." You have to be enrolled in a nursing program and have taken one year of nursing courses. Sounds like an amazing opportunity to get your foot in the door! NYP is also looking for NAs from time to time. They hire people with CNA certifications and nursing students in BSN programs. The positions are up online only for a short period of time (few days at most) as HR gets flooded with applications.
