hi, my mum is going for her fourth colonoscopy, went to see the Surgeon last week. the guy is very thorough, but she said he asked her if she had problems with her throat, and palpated it.

Would have thought that the throat was nothing to do with the other end!!! Anyone shed any light as to why he asked that???

Sounds like he's planning on going down from the top too, and needs to know if she has any throat problems that will hinder insertion.

[color=#483d8b]has nothing to do with a sore throat, but definitely the questions about throat problems and palpating the throat/airway area.

Just a part of an assessment.

May have considered the a****** to appetite routes - or just took a look at the airway to determine Class as it relates to visual structures in the event that intubation could become necessary.

Seems odd at first glance, but ...

Hope that your mom does great!

Wonder if he was checking her thyroid? Thyroid probems could affect anesthesia and bowel function.

Maybe he thought your mom was in hospital administration - they always seem to have their heads up their a**es, which would affect the exam.;)

Good one.

Often they'l opt to do a combined EGD and colonoscopy, which is why the doc probably asked about her throat. We see that often in my dept.

Also, a lot of people out there dont know the difference between the swallow tube, the breathing tube or the thyroid. "is there anything wrong with your throat?" covers a wide range...

If she has an active strep infection, that's something that should be addressed and cleared up before any invasive procedure. And if she has any comorbidities that put her at risk for endocarditis, etc, they it is even more important to address this.
