What's the best way to prep for NP?

Published

I will be starting a nurse practitioner program in a few months and just wanted to start getting a jump on things as far as preparing myself for this type of role. For working nurse practitioners or current students what do you think would help most before you started school? Getting a pharmacology review book or an advanced Patho book seem like obvious choices to me but I could be wrong.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Practice performing a really, really, really detailed exam.

There are You Tube videos that are out there which do a wonderful job of demonstrating proper procedure/steps.

Examining each cranial nerve function.

Performing a musculoskeletal exam.

Doing a funduscopic exam of the eye.

Etc. etc. etc.

It can take quite a while to do everything that is required first time. However, with practice, you will get quicker.

Then you'll need to make an exam note. Be prepared to know how to record your findings, such as doing an H&P.

It does take practice.

I agree with PP, also I bought a ton of review books and it really made no difference. Our required textbooks are more than enough reading, it's difficult to get through the required readings let alone supplemental books.
