Hello everyone. I'm new here and wanted to spill my guts. Gosh where to start. I am a pre-nursing student at ASU (Augusta State University) in Ga.
I applied to their program three time now. I received my letter in June I believe. I was put on the waiting list. I was happy and frustrated at the same time. At least I got on the well alternate list I mean. At this point I am very very frustrated. :angryfire Well beyond that to be honest. I applied at two other school and did not get accepted. I blame myself because fresh out of high school I started college and fooled around and messed my GPA up. I had to pull my gpa from 1.9 to right now it is 2.7. Nursing advisors are telling me maybe I should consider another major. That is so discouraging. Especially when you put your all into it.

I guess the C's hurt me. I would take classes over again, but majority I have already taken twice. ASU fall semester starts Aug 21. I was informed I can be notified as late as Aug. 14 if I got accepted. I wish I knew where I was on the alternate list. But I just wanted to vent. Trying to keep the faith. Prayerfully I will hear something. Thanks for listening. Huh.
Hi
I'm sorry if this sound negative, but I highly recommend you would consider re-taking A&P 1 + 2 over b/c they're the backbone of all nursing classes. Classes like patho, pharm, and med-surg are all derive from A&P's material. Without good foundation, it is very difficult to survive nursing school.
I wish you best of luck in your nursing career!
Try re-taking the courses at a different school or with a different instructor. Also, apply for other programs in Georgia. There are other schools out there that might give you a better chance (or, at the very least, that might be more willing to work with you on making you more competitive for their programs). You might even want to apply for a different type of program (ADN or LPN).
Definately retake A&P. It's a critical and fundamental class in nursing... a C in an important class like A&P 1&2 most likely won't cut it if you're applying for a competitive program.
Work on your english skills. Retake an english class (or two). Having a C in english might also discourage them. It's important that the admissions staff is confident in your ability to understand textbooks, medical journals, and various medical references. It is probably even more important for them to feel confident that you can successfully (and professionally) communicate with your patients and other medical staff.
You might also want to retake math, especially if that C was in a basic math course. Nursing isn't necessarily math-intensive (we aren't going to need to use complex things like Laplace transforms, multivariable calculus, or Fourier analysis anytime during our nursing careers), but a basic understanding of mathematics is important. One example: Drug calculations!
Build up some experience in the healthcare field. Volunteer (or volunteer more) at a hospital. Become a CNA or EMT. Show the admissions staff that the healthcare field is something you're very interested in.
Try to look at your application from the perspective of the people who are determining which applicants they want (and don't want) for their program.
Nursing is a competitive field these days. You might need to work extra, extra-hard in order to get into a program... but if it's something you really want, it's something you can work hard to accomplish. Don't give up!

o.k., first of all, i am truly sorry to hear that you have not made it in yet. second, i disagree with the advisor telling you that you should find a different major. i'm sure she meant well, but there are always more roads to take than one.
i am a second year nursing student at ASU, so I KNOW it is a very competitive program. did you try augusta tech, i was told it is not competitive entry...they put your name on a list and work their way down the list. you would graduate with an LPN degree and you could take a bridge program to RN. second choice would be to take their paramedic program and then take something like excelsior online to get your RN. you DO have options. i believe ASU only allows you to retake any prereq. just once for a better grade and that's it. at least that's what i was told. i agree that if you are having problems with prereq science classes then the nursing program will be even harder to pass. there are some students that make it all the way to the final semester of the nursing program and fail the final semester. and as you know, ASU only has one class a year, which means you have to wait a whole year to retake the final semester. what i am trying to say is, maybe it would benefit you to understand first why you are having trouble with the science classes. maybe you are just a poor test taker? you could try to take some seminars on test taking. maybe you are not given 100%? i am by no means saying that you aren't, but be VERY honest with yourself on this one. are you giving every bit of yourself to getting in to the nursing program. maybe, you need a science tutor to get you going on the right track? if you really want to be a nurse then don't give up! i believe we can all be what we want, some people just have to try harder than others.
anyway this may all be for nothing and i may see you next semester. please if you have any questions for me please just ask here or pm me. i really want you to get what you want out of life and if i can assist you in that then i am more than happy to.
sincerely,
jay
