What to wear to Nursing "new employee" Orientation

Published

I am just wondering what to wear to the first day of new employee orientation? I'm assuming business/professional dress such as a pantsuit but I don't want to show up overdressed. Nevertheless I don't want to show up underdressed either. Any advice?? My orientation will be in the Bay Area of Cali so it's a pretty fashion oriented area... :p

I think a business/professional pantsuit would be perfect. I do some nursing orientations and always appreciate the effort to dress appropriately. Rarely does anyone show up in jeans or sweats, even nice ones are not appropriate.

Good Luck

Thanks so much RN!

I will be starting new employee orientation in middle of January. From the package I received, it said "casual dress is appropriate." I don't think it's necessary to be too dressy.

What goes on on the first day of orientation anyways?

I would say business casual, no jeans. Khakis, slacks, skirt, blouse, sweaters, etc.

Care Bear...where will you be working?? I didn't receive anything in regards to dress but I appreciate hearing what everyone else's programs state....

For the hospital that I work at, business casual or scrubs. No jeans, no shorts, no tennis shoes (unless you are wearing scrubs).

About 1/2 (more than 40 attended) wore scrubs both days of our orientation. I had to meet both days with my department head, so I opted to go business casual (nice pants and a sweater) cause I didn't want her to think I was "too casual".

Good luck and congrats on your job!!!

I'd say the dressier side of business casual for the first day. As you progress through the nursing orientation you should be told when to be dressed to be in clinical areas (i.e., in scrubs).

Good luck to you! :)

Hi LM Neonurse.. I spoke to the recruiter at LPCH yesterday and she said to wear business casual that first week.. I accepted the 12 hour night position. How about you? I'm trying to prepare for the unit, while study for the NCLEX at the same time! The pressure is building! :rotfl:

Hey SJSU! Awesome that she let you know, I've still been wondering but now the verdict is in. I also took the 12hr night, Judie said maybe after 6 months something daytime would open but with the great differential, free parking etc. I've been thinking I may just stick with nights for awhile. We'll see though. Did you get the email about the parking for orientation etc?? How many multi month passes are you going to buy?? I think I'll try to email Judie either today or tomorrow and see how long we'll be needing to park on days because it is so much cheaper to just buy the passes than to buy the daily scratchers...I also need to take my NCLEX but I don't even have my ATT yet...I guess since I didn't go to school in CA it may take awhile so I've just been trying to study hard for that and of course trying to get everything lined up for the move!!

Actually no they didn't tell much about parking, but I went ahead and looked online. It looks as if the best thing is to buy the monthly ones since we'll be orienting for about 6 months. Wow 50 bucks a month.. oh well, I think being able to work at Stanford is worth it. I may look into taking the light rail to the Caltrain, since I live close to the stations in south san jose. I don't know if I'll wake up early enough though! I think I'll email the recruiter today and ask her.

So where did you move from? What brought you to the bay area? Ok then, thanks for the info!

That's awesome that you live close enough to catch the train! Do you like the bay area?? My parents are in San Leandro, so I will be staying with my mother and driving around the bay. I really don't know how long it will take but I figure over an hour, it's like a 25 mile drive but during the day shift orientation I will be driving with the flow of traffic which will take quite awhile. Any idea how the traffic is from that direction?? I've actually only been there once to visit so I'm quite clueless about the area. When I get there, I hope to spend a day or two trying to learn the area so I'll be able to get around without the fear of getting lost.

I'm moving up from Hawaii (Cali will be quite a change :) ) because my husband is in the military and keeps getting deployed. Hopefully he can get transferred in August to Camp Pendelton until he is out. Once that time comes, we will most likely stay in the Bay area (if we can afford a house). I agree with you, Stanford is one of those things that you can't pass up! One of my instructors in school used to work in the PICU there and she absolutely loved it so I think we'll be in for a great experience!

If you want I can email the parking attachments that I received, just let me know...
