I will be graduating from nursing school in May, and is just curious about what type of things do new graduates do when they become a nurse. My plans is to invest in a house and maybe a new car. I have a 10-year old son and he is really looking forward to this. Do you think this is possible with the income new grads will start off making?
Buy the way, in my state (MI) most hospitals start btw 22-24 dollars an hour.

Well congrats to being almost there... This is your year! I just graduated in Nov 06 and my plan is to buy nothing for awhile. And since I'm just getting started, maybe I'm speaking too soon, but... I feel like right now, all my income is going toward all these bills, credit cards, loans and such. Hopefully this phase won't last long and I WILL be able to think about those materialistic things that I've been looking forward to for such a long time. As for now, I'm just happy I passed!!! :) And you will be too, good luck to ya!

Do you have any student loans to pay off? Most new RNs have student loans, so we aren't inclined to buy anything major. How much does a house (2 BR/2 BA) cost in your neighborhood? Unless you have money saved up for a down payment, you won't be looking at buying a house anytime soon. If you have a car that's still running fine, I would let it ride for awhile. A lot of your pay will be eaten up by taxes, union dues (if you are with a union), and retirement plans (403 (b)), etc. See a tax accountant about your finances before making any significant investments/purchases. You'll probably be saving for awhile....

We plan to live off of my husband's income the way we have since I have been in school. We will use my income to pay off our consumer debt and my student loans as well as save some for retirement this year. We are planning on taking the kids on a cruise for Christmas this year. In 2008 we will start and finish phase 2 of our kitchen remodel.

Congratulations!
A house sounds excellent but I agree to stay with your current car if its running. I'd be conservative because like Smiles said taxes will eat a huge chunk of your paycheck and and definitely do retirement funding before buying "stuff". I'd relate this to success after dieting in that you don't want to celebrate weight loss by eating a ton of food because that negates the whole purpose same with making a decent living, its no longer a decent living if you start upping your spending habits. A few inexpensive treats for your dear son wouldn't be out of line though.

I bought myself a new car--needed it anyway since our son needed one and we all traded around and I got the new one! :) Paid off some bills, accrued some more...the usual lol

That's what we are doing. Once the debts are gone, we'll be saving up the downpayment and lot costs because we plan to build.

paying off all of my debt, then saving up to go back to grad school, or leave the country and do missions work for a year or 2

I'll probably be moving back into a basement apartment at my parents place after I graduate, and living rent-free for a while, so my plan is to SAVE SAVE SAVE everything I can. Hopefully I'll be able to buy a house either for myself, or for renting/future income within two or three years.

It might be good to consult a financial planner before you do too much. Not only will you be able to invest as you would like, but you will also make sure you and your son are provided for later on. I was very stupid when I got out of school and don't have anything to show for it.
Good luck and congratulations!
