What do you think about a student missing clinical?

Published

I have 4 days left of clinical. I have a cold and started coughing a lot from 2 days ago. I have clinicals today and I am coughing so much. I have a productive cough and every time I cough, my chest hurts. I'm clearing my throat every 2 minutes. I also have clinicals tomorrow too. I wanted to go in, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go in when I'm coughing so much even if I'm sucking on cough drops. Is it okay to miss clinicals because of this?

In the working world, I would say please oh please stay home. The alternative is to wear a mask all shift.....most schools allow for 1 or 2 clinical absences...call your teacher fr advisement....

Do you know your schools policy regarding missed clinical days? If not, perhaps becoming familiar with them will help in making your decision.

Maybe you could try an OTC that is much stronger than a cough drop before deciding to miss clinical. Wearing a mask is an option, too. What about switching a clinical day with a classmate?

This depends completely on what your grade is in there and school policy. My school had a zero tolerance for absences and any missed days goes down as a zero in the gradebook. Doesn't take many of those to tank the whole semester.

I suggest you show up and let your clinical instructor decide if you belong there or not. Decent chance you get sent home but you get all the credit for arriving prepared and under the weather - big points for dedication.

I concur with the other posters. First, check out the policy for make-up clinical times (if there is one). Then I would call the instructor and simply tell her that you’re feeling bad. I would offer to come in tomorrow and that you will wear a mask the entire time. It will show commitment. Good luck and hope you begin feeling better.

My clinical instructor told us on day 1 that if you're sick to stay home. Some patients may be immunocompromised and something as minor as the cold or the flu could throw them off. I feel bad for you if your school doesn't have a policy for sickness, especially since it's cold and flu season.

We can miss two clinical days - of course, we have to make them up afterwards, so I try to avoid missing at all costs.

Hope you feel better, sooN!!!

Depends on your school policy. Some school have make up days.

My school? There's no such thing as an excused absence. If you miss 2, you'll fail the class. If you miss and don't call once? Probation. Do it again...you're out.

Our best option is to come to class and lost 50 points (from our daily grade).

I don't think anything, it's between the student and instructor and school policy. If you are allowed to miss a clinical and you feel you shouldn't go then don't go. I have missed a clinical before. We were allowed to miss 2 clinicals and they had to be made up, the reason why we missed didn't matter.

My school had a policy about missed days. Everyone had to complete the same number of hours, set by the Board. If you were sick, the missed hours had to be completed prior to the end of the semester. In addition, an assignment was given.

Yes, check with your school policy and your instructors. If it's like mine, we're allowed one and a half absences yet we're told not to come if we're sick :/

I always take my allowed days off. My clinicals are usually a waste of time anyway.
