What schools in new york is approved by california brn

Published

I am a BSN graduate in the Philippines and have a license here in New York. I wanted to move in California and get a reciprocity to get a license there but I heard that if you are a foreign graduate CA BRN will require you to take additional course work.

I wonder if I can take those subjects/ missing minimum requirements here in New york?

Please please. Hoping for your suggestions and ideas that can help me. Thank you and Godbless!

I suggest you contact the California BON Board of Registered Nursing and check on the official requirements for license transfer/reciprocity.

Good luck!

Obtain the CA BRN information in writing, so that you don't pay for courses in NY and then have everything backfire on you after the fact.

Assuming that you already have both the local PH nursing license AND a valid SSN (work authorized) to begin just the initial application process.

So if you have those particulars, you do need to apply with the CA BRN and wait to see what courses, if any, are missing or deficient.

Once that's determined and assume that your application is denied the endorsement, you need to get clear written explanation from your evaluator of what the courses are that are missing or deficient AND can those courses be taken in NY?

Remember it may only be two (2) deficient courses or it could be up to four (4) of them.

You may be taking up courses and they may not be approved by the CA BRN and/or you may be taking not enough courses to meet the requirements within the 3 year limitation to "complete" your deficiencies with the CA BRN or else, the application gets put into the "abandoned" pile and you lose the non-refundable application fees.

You'll then have to re-start the entire process (new transcripts, new course descriptions and hope that your school still has their copies when asked a few years later) all over again with brand new non-refundable fees and have to meet any new CA BRN requirements at that future time.

Several years of paid US (or foreign) hospital experience can not be substituted for the missing or deficient college courses.

This is a "new backdoor approach" that many PH applicants are trying to get back into CA but again, the CA BRN is very wise to this method of going to NY or TX or FL then try to endorse back into CA, only to find the door is closed until the deficiencies are met.

That's why it's highly suggested that it's better to re-take the courses in a CA BRN approved school and deal with less headaches and possible future denials of out-of-state courses with no guarantees and a further waste of time and money.

Thanks for getting back. But let's say they sent me a letter and saying that I have deficiency/s. Can I take the course work here in New york?

Thank you! God bless

Again, please re-read what Caliotter3 and I have already mentioned to you. Until you have your transcripts reviewed and evaluated by a CA BRN staffer and can you proceed further with the advices given.

You're only going to be second guessing, 100 times guessing on what to do should the CA BRN denied your application. There's not one single person on this forum or amongst the 100,000's plus viewers who can give you the exact answers to your questions.

The ultimate decision comes from the CA BRN evaluator, which is your main contact person if you wish to get licensed in CA.

Best case scenario you meet all the requirements and you'll get your license endorsed, worse case you'll need to the find where and how many classes do you need to take within the 3 year time limit.

Just know that in CA, these re-take and deficiency courses are very limited and some can be very expensive with many schools taking names to go on a wait-list.

It is at that point, you need to let the evaluator of your concerns and in writing of possible re-take and acceptance of certain NY courses.

You should go over to the World forum, under the Nurse Registration tab and you'll find the many of other applicants all in the same situation for some better reads on this topic.
