What pre-req./requirements are in your school?

Published

I was reading this forum and noticed that every school has different number of pre-reqs to nursing program. For example, in my college you can not apply without:

1. A@P1, A@P2

2. ENG 101

3. Math (intermediate algebra)

4. CSA (computers)

5. Chemistry

Also, psychology, microbiology, and sociology are strongly advised to be taken prir to NP. GPA -no less then 2.8 (however, nursing advisor said that in reallity it must be at least 3.4;)).

And TEAS with at least 75%.

What about your school?

1. English Comp II

2. Intermediate Algebra

3. Intro to Computer Information Systems

4. General Psychology

5. Principles of Biology I

6. Principles of Biology I Lab

7. Microbiology

8. Microbiology Lab

9. Anatomy

10. Anatomy Lab

I am at a university, so you must complete the GE courses before starting the professional phase. (We don't need to re-apply to the program) Transfer students with a degree are exempt. The Nursing Department requirements are:

One year of Biology

One year of Chemistry (general and Organic/biochem)

Microbiology

A computer class

Statistics

Specializes in DDS.

At my community college our pre-reqs are the following

Math 137 (intermediate algebra)

Eng 101 (english comp)

A&P 1&2

Chemistry

CSA (computer class, which you can test out of)

And they highly recommend us to take microbiology & psycology while on waiting list as well with a few other classes, especially your waiting for a year or two.

However you can apply once you have your biology's completed.

I will be attending an ADN program so the pre-req's are practically nill. I have to get a grade of "C" or better in a biology and have a 2.0 GPA to be accepted. I'm taking the biology now and already have credits from this school for a different cirriculum so I already have my 2.0.

The downsides to my school is that they are so lax on admission, they will pretty much let anyone in and then weed out people. They also allow people just starting college for the first time take a full schedule so people may have A&P I, Nursing I, and Sociology thier first semester. I think that is an aweful lot considering our Nursing I is lecture, lab, and clinical and is 8 credits alone.

However, they do offer an extended track that takes 6 semesters instead of 4 and then there are people like me who know they will be going into nursing so they are taking courses geared toward that degree without actually being accepted in to the program yet. At this point the only courses I cannot take without being in the program are the actual nursing courses. So this year I'm taking Human Biology in hopes that it will help prepare me for the demand of A&P I&II which I will take next year. I will only need the nursing courses, microbiology, and sociology by the time I actually begin my nursing program and for me I think that will be plenty .

Specializes in ICU.

ENG 1530: English Composition II 3

ENG 1540: Writing about Literature 3

PSY 1510: General Psychology I 3

What I am really suprised about is there is no microbiology anyplace in the program unless you persue a BA. weird I think.

Kim

Specializes in Med/Surg/Bariatrics.

Before entering the program:

English I

Psychology

Sociology

Strongly recommend:

A&P I and II

And while in the program:

Human Development

Medical Ethics

Abnormal Psych.

They also take transfer credits from CC or U. So in my case all I needed to take was Ethics and Abnormal Psych. since everything else I had already taken and they accepted.

Jess--May I ask where you are going to nursing school? I'm also in Missouri and I am attending Columbia College.
