I would like to join the Army Reserve when I get my RN license. I will be approx 45 years old. I understand you don't have to go to basic training but must be able to past a basic physical exam.
Does anyone know what they are looking for:
Height/weight
How many situps/pullups
Running
Health issues.
I am in general in good health but I have a couple of years before I graduate and want to try and build myself up to be prepared. Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Hello:
You will have to go to OBLC, which is sort of like boot camp for officers. It is in Texas. I believe that it is approx. 9 weeks long. I know that there are web links that would give you the PT requirements. But I don't know what they are. I bet if you did a search on allnurses. you could find out. They have been posted in the past. Also check out a current thread from a nurse that is currently At OBLC. She is very helpful and will answer questions that you have about that. Also check out old thread from another person that went through OBLC. Do a search. There is also a blog from a nurse that went to OBLC. If you can't find on allnurses, then google it. There is also a web site that tells you all of the medical info. that you may be looking for. Sorry I don't have the site for you!!!! Good luck with school and with your future career as a ARMY nurse!!! (of course the OBLC will be more geared for officers and will have lots of powerpoint

There are a lot medical problems that are disqualifiers from joining the military, but the good news is most issues that don't preclude you from completing the basic pt test are usually waiverable....In general there is no hard and fast rules for a lot of medical problems each waiver goes up the chain of command to be looked and evaulated on an individual basis.

Thanks so much for the web sites. I was just wondering the height and weight requirements also. When you get to be my age it is alot harder to lose and get back in better shape. I'm working on it though. My recruiter already gave me the physical fitness requi9rements for sit ups etc. I am planning on joining next June when my youngest is out of high school. He has already finished his basic training and was a split. My other son is currently at Fort Gordon for AIT. Wish me lots of luck in keeping up with these youngsters!! By the way, I'll take any tips you have for getting in shape.

Physical Fitness Tips for those getting 'back in the game':
Start SLOW to get your lower extremeties back in shape and to thus avoid a stress fracture or something that would be terrible
I recommend walking regimen to get BMR increased and strengthening legs... start stretching a lot to get more limber... then gradually start working on crunches (they test situps but I feel crunches are less - destructive on the back and still build up abs) and pushups - start getting reps up by doing normal pushups until failure and then from your knees... do ab exercises "the plank" to strengthen abs which also makes pushups a bit easier.

Army Reserve OBLC is 3.5 weeks in length. Age is waiverable.

Thank you for the tips. I have started a walk to run program. I have always loved yoga so the plank position is good along with the stretching. Still having trouble with upper arm strength with the push ups. I'm not ready to give up yet. Just hope my tennis elbow doesn't get in the way. I will never give up tennis!!!! So I am trying free weights for upper body strength. Just wish I had a workout partner for motivation. I'll keep trying. Hope to be ready in a few months. Thanks again and thanks for your service.

Whatever your decision, please come in at the height and weight standards. The Army will let you come in very over weight. I saw this in my OBC class for both Active and Reserves. Folks who do this, make the themselves and Army look very bad.
Also, please be able to pass your PT test. Again, it is very sad when a soldier cannot meet the standard.

I'm in the boat as you, I'm doing my best to try and get in the right shape before OBLC. But I have no upper body strength to do push-ups. A friend of mine who is in the navy suggested that I start out by doing the push-ups on my knees then gradually build my way up. I do about 20-40 a day that way. Maybe that will help you too!!!
