What are some of the nicer hospitals in twin cities?

Hello, everyone!

I am graduating from my ADN program this May and plan to move to Twin Cities afterwards. I have heard about the hardships of finding a job for new grads there, but I just absolutely love the area! I do have some experience working in acute care as an LPN, and hope it might help to find a job. My question is: which hospitals have good reputation among nurses and which don't? Are there any places I should absolutely avoid?

Abbott has a nice campus and is pretty nurse friendly as far as i know. One of my best friends works there in the human resources and training dept and conducts the new nurse orientation and education stuff. I have another friend there who is a wound care nurse. I used to live in Minnesota, but I never worked in any of the hospitals, only nursing homes. I never had a hard time finding jobs in Minnesota. There were several times I had numerous offers at one time. Because the area isn't HUGE - it is easy to network. I used to work at Walker Methodist Nursing Home - a high acuity nursing home in the lakes area of Minneapolis - they are also nurse friendly - especially to new grads. It may be another good place to start if you are interested.

I too have heard decent things about Abbott..... unfortunately it's in a not so nice neighborhood. My husband works at United Hospital in St. Paul and I've heard good things about nursing there as well. I had clinicals both there and at St. Joe's (in St. Paul) and I liked them both, United a bit more.

Hello there fellow Minnesota nurse! I would have to say HCMC is the best as far as different areas to specialize in. There are so many different areas you can choose from. Plus they pay very well, and the opportunity for advancement and change is always there.

HCMC has a very diverse clientele.

But if your looking for a "tamer" atmosphere, I'd have to say Abbott or St. Paul Childrens. It's not as hectic as HCMC.

I was just offered a job at HCMC, which I'm seriously considering, so maybe I'll see you there!

I volunteer at North memorial Hosp and it is really nice. Abotts is nice, I don't know to much about fairview they was just on the news a couple months ago and I don't it was something good. Hennipen Country is ok. go to yahoo and search twin cities hosp and then you can look each one up and see who's hiring.

i don't know--it may not be the nicest neighborhood, but it's also not the worst. I work at Mpls Childrens, and live 5 blocks from there. I've never had any problems. Of course-I don't walk to and from work. You just have to be smart.

To the original poster of this thread--Children's Hospitals and Clinics is awesome to work for if you are at all interested in pediatrics. Feel free to IM me if you want as I have worked at various hospitals in the area, and am happiest here at Childrens.

I spend a lot of time in that area for work, and you're right--- it's not the worst, but it's not great. One thing that sticks out in my head is an experience a past coworker of mine had who worked at Abbott. She was in her car leaving work one day and suddenly was surrounded by a bunch of "gang bangers", if you will. They tried to yank her car door open, but thankfully she had it locked. She stepped on the gas and took off, but not before one of them could swing a baseball bat and bash her back window in.

I am a new grad and just started at Fairview Ridges, and so far I really like it! I applied at a bunch of hospitals in the Twin Cities area and found it hard to find any that wanted new grads, especailly in what I wanted, which is pediatrics.

I just had a baby there 2 weeks ago and all the staff I encountered were fabulous and seemed very happy.

The VA Medical Center is also a great place to work, and it's not downtown Mpls. DHamilton
