What job(s) could I do to see if nursing is right for me?

Published

I'm seriously considering going back to school for nursing, but I'd like to get some work experience to see if it's really what enjoy doing. I have a bachelor's degree in a non-health related field. What jobs might I apply for (considering my lack of any medical training) that would give me a feel for what nursing is really like?

Thanks for your advice!

The medical clerks on my unit are so busy performing a variety of tasks that keep all running smoothly. You become familar with the hospital computer system, hospital supplies, organization of the unit, direct pts, keep track of pt. placement in rooms, constantly around pt. care listening to nurses and doctors discuss cases. Might be a good job to see how nursing really is. I think the pay and benefits are fairly decent. Also most hospitals are really in need to fill these type of positions.

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

Have you tried getting your CNA? It is often just a few weeks long and you could get a job working very closely with the nurses. :) Good luck to you.

CNA.

Like Patches O'Holiulihan said, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."

If you can put up with some of the messy CNA tasks, you can get past the RN "ick factor"

Do you already have a job that you might like to hang on to if nursing doesn't work out? A possibility in that case is to volunteer at a hospital in your area. It can be as little as 3-4 hours per week. Most hospitals will take you whenever they can get you. Obviously you can't do as much as even a CNA, but if you've never seen a hospital it's a good start. You will get an idea of life on patient units & be able to see nurses at work.
