Hi I'm researching the differences between attending El Centro or Brookhaven, but looking into these I noticed they were quite different. There are differences in the application process and the curriculum. I was wondering why they were different since they are both in the Dallas Community Colleges. Any explanations, anyone? I'm confused.
~Thanks! :smackingf

Hello the Brookhaven program use to be a satellite program for El Centro like North lake is now and had the same requirements and application process. Some of the teachers that were at Brookhaven decided to start a program at Brookhaven that was no longer associated with El Centro. I am a student of Brookhaven and am enjoying it. The teachers are very supportive.

I recently graduated from the El Centro program. Do your best to get into the Brookhaven program. I found too many of the El Centro instructors to be less than supportive and there was frequent "discrepancies" with grading:nono:. Policies seem to change from year to year. This past semester if you got 2 test scores below 70 you were removed from the program. Minimum passing grade is a 78 vs. other programs including BSN's where this is not the case. Silly pharm test in which you get three attempts to pass the test and then you are out of the program. If you fail the pharm test you are not allowed to review it. Also the pharm test has no bearing on your GPA, it is simply pass/fail.
There is one lecture instructor who has a very high failure rate. If 30% of a class failed that might be considered average by some, but when it is higher than that it is a reflection back on the instructor. Clinical instructors range from some who are enthusiastic about teaching to some who are maniacal ex: One instructor tore up a students major care plan on the floor of a hospital in front of staff and other students. This same one yelled at a student in front of her patient to the point that the patient told both of them to leave the room.
Yes there are more instructors than the ones I mentioned, but it is the general attitude that many of the instructors have that I stated previously, that is...........less than supportive.
Please don't mistake me for a whiny student who didn't make it through the program and is now disgruntled. I graduated in 06' and unfortunately saw many who should be nurses not make......some because of the actions mentioned above. Now I am just being brutally honest so others know what they are getting into.
The good part is that if you do make it through the program you have a high likelihood of passing the State Boards on the first attempt.
Continue to ask around about El Centro's reputation. If at possible try for Brookhaven, Trinity Valley Community College, or one of the other programs. They turn out good nurses without the excessive junk that has to be endured by El Centro / North Lake students.

Craig is right that there are some bad instructors at ECC. But I have found most of them nice and supportive. I go to North Lake and I know only two instructors who shouldn't teach. By the way, they changed some rules recently, for example there is no pharm tests anymore. Pharm questions are integrated into each unit test. And there is no 70% rule either. I think there is no perfect nursing program out there. You really have to be flexible and open to be successful in school. I suggest applying to 2-3 different programs so you can decide what program works best for you. Good luck, Katie
Thanks everyone for your responses. I really appreciate anything anyone has to contribute. It is very helpful, how else would we ever know about some things that happen.
Craig, congrats on you making it through even through all the difficult stuff.
I guess sometimes we don't know what life will bring, it can't be easy all the time, but atleast we can try to make it better.
Keep up the hard work!
