What is an internship/residency?

I stumbled across this section one day and see many newly graduated nurses applying for internships or residency. What does that mean? Is this a required thing to do in Texas once you have graduated or does this improve one's ability to find employment? Do you get paid the full benefits of a nurse? Do you have to have a BSN or do they accept ADNs.

Internships/Residencies are becoming more common in hospitals. They are essentially Graduate Nurse positions as well as nurses that may have experience in one area but desires to transfer to a different specialty and this is their way to get their foot in the door. The internships usually range from 12-16 weeks or longer/shorter. After the internship period you are usually extended an offer to transition into an RN I position within that unit/facility.

As far as if it's BSN or ADN and benefit opportunities it depends strictly on the facility.
