What helps you study? New student

It has been the first week of Nursing school and I am not sure if I should be taking notes while I read because it is a lot of stuff! My patho teacher provided at least a lecture outline but I am not sure if what she wants us to know because it seems too vague... I used to copy on paper my professor's powerpoints but I do not want to get into that habit because it takes up too much time.

I just want to know what worked for most of you and the different ways to study or if anyone would just recommend flashcards? Would that be too much?
