I have to retake 5 classes socio.psych.dev psych anatomy 1&2 because i messed up but i was hoping to retake them and all the required classes and then applying. Also i was thinking of volunterring or doing some extra activites also raising my gpa. I want to know is this a waste of time because already for the retaken courses its an automatic disqualification, i am really determined but i dont know how hard it is to get into and i called the school up but no one was able to help me besides this nasty woman who still didn't understand my question ! i just wanted to know is there a chance because i heard its a very hard school. What is the gpa they are looking for as well as what would the grades be like they want to see im just confuseddd because i messed up and i want to get back on track and i really want to attend stony brook.

I applied to stony brook back in 05. With a soild 3.0, letters from a new york state assembly man and his father whose life i saved and 5 years of EMS experience I was turned away. There were only 25 positions for something like 225 applicants. I don't know if thats how it is anymore but it was when i went. So in short my answer to you is this. Unless you are in the top 5 percent don't even bother, not to point it out but the fact thaty ou already boned up your other classes woulnd't give me the warm fuzzies either about admitting you, but then again I'm not the one signing the acceptance letter. So what you want but from personal experience. There are plently of other school around long island to go to. Good luck.

Hi Determination,
I'm also interested in stony brook. I called a few weeks ago and spoke to someone. I asked them how many applications are received each year and how many are accepted. She told me that out of approx. 600 applicants, only 65-80 are accepted. I almost fainted. if stony is your dream school, you should definitely apply, but make sure you have back ups!
They usually hold information sessions for the nursing program on campus. here's the link to the info on the next session:

You should definitely not give up, yes Stony Brook is an extremely competitive program but the good thing about Stony Brook is that they do not look at grades alone - they look at a mix of GPA, reference letters, essay, pre-requisite grades, volunteer experience etc. Because you do not have all your pre-reqs done and are currently retaking some because of poor grades you may have a harder time getting in. I suggest doing what you can though, retake them, if you don't get in reapply next year! Always have a backup from another school because there are very limited slots. Good luck, don't be discouraged by others.
