What area of nursing do you like most and why?

Published

I'd like to hear from some of you nurses out there about what area you like the best in nursing. I have scheduled a time to job-shadow in the hospitals to see what area I might like to work in before I actually go to school for it. I know I definitely do not want to work in Geriatrics. What areas have you worked in and what is your favorite/least favorite and why?

Specializes in CCU, ICU, education and Oncology.

Regard me I prefer and work in ICU where alot of nursing procedures done and working with critcal cases.

It perhaps need alot of effort but I am happy there.

Specializes in ER, Clinical Informatics.

I'm about 5 weeks from completing my 4th block of school. I'm seriously looking into a postion in ICU if I can get hired in as a new grad. I just perfer being able to see almost immediate results with interventions that I perform. Might come from back in the day when I was an EMT. But I would much rather think and have to figure out problems like what are found in the ICU than in a reg Med-Surg floor.

personally i love demntia- never a dull moment nor a slow day lol. not tomention all the really cool "trips" one gets to go on.... ( different eras, jobs, being someone else lolol) - also keeps ya physically fit warding off the wayward blows and running after the runaways. an all in one job lol.

Specializes in ICU/ER.

I am a new grad December of 07 and am working in the ICU and I LOVE it....I hope I never lose this "I love my job" " I love being a nurse" feeling. The thing I love best of the ICU short of the interesting cases, lots of procedures, lots of communication with the Drs and the wonderful ratios. is the amount of time I have with me patients. We do full care, baths/med passes/treatments etc etc . I am able to do so much teaching. I love that part. I was torn between Er and ICU because I really like the critical side of nursing, but in the ER you see them, and move them out. In ICU I can have the same patients for days if not longer. I work with not only the patient but their family. It is a wonderful job. Not for everyone, but so far, perfect for me!!

Your future is so exciting! Congrats.

Specializes in NICU.

It's NICU for me for sure. I just graduated in December and I already found what I love. I love that I only have 2 patients. I have so much time to focus on each baby rather than being pulled in a million different directions. I love that the docs are in house 24/7 so if anything comes up, they are right there. I love watching the babies go from sometime 1 + pounds uo to 5 pounds and then out to home. I love seeing the families and teaching the families. Of course there are days when I feel like pulling my hair out but the majority of days I really love what I do. Best of luck to you!

Specializes in Oncology.

I absolutely LOVE oncology. People often think of oncology as a depressing specialty, but it is really just the opposite. I have not yet met an oncology nurse who doesn't love it - I'm serious. Yes, there are people get burned out sometimes because of the death involved, but it's such a wonderful specialty in so many ways. I feel so grateful each day for the opportunity to work in this field... and I mean that.
