What age do you plan to retire?

Published

Yesterday I got pulled to another floor due to low census. I had a patient that was 80 years old. I was told in am report the wife of the patient was also a nurse and I thought "okay she is retired right?" Well later that morning as I was taking care of him we started talking about nursing and how it has changed through the years. She told me "I'm a nurse in the ER(at another facility)." She looked pretty good for her age and then went on to tell me she just celbrated her 50 years at being a Rn. She graduated in 1958, she was 75 and planed to work at least another 10 years!!! I really do love being a nurse but my goal is retire early at 55 and enjoy my retirement. Anybody else plan on working into their 70's? I have known other nurses in their 80's but never someone that worked full time in a progressive trauma ER. I guess I'm not that energetic.

ASAP. Although retirement for me is 30-40 years away, I don't think I will ever fully retire. I think working maybe 1 day a week PRN just to keep me from boredom would be good. Otherwise I would probably spend all my life savings at the mall. :smokin: I do max out my roth and put another 5% into the 403b. I dream of the day I don't need to work to live.

I think I would get bored if I was home all the time so I hope I can at least work part-time after the medicare kicks in.

Who says you have to be home all the time?

Just because you retire does not mean you have to stay home, and do nothing. I would like to retire at 55. I love nursing but face it it

is back breaking and tiring mentally and physcially. I would like to travel and spend time with my children and grandchildren(if i have any by then). I also plan to volunteer at the redcross or aha to do what ever they can find for me to do. We have a busy farm so I don't think I will be eating bon bons at age 55.

I plan to semi-retire at 70. Like some others, I went into nursing in my 30's so I gotta work. Plus, I'm really a type A too and work two jobs, volunteer on a fire dept, church and still help out a lot with grandkids and I wouldn't be happy any other way...lol.

NEVER !!!!!!!

As long as I am healthy and able to do nursing I will show up. I work in hospice PRN so I can work more than 40 hours a week. After 45 years as an RN, its part of being:nurse: me!

september 23, 2014. the day after dh's 62nd birthday, and a few months after the child should have graduated from college. (whether or not she's done, the money spigot shuts off then!) he's going to retire. i'll have to work another three years, but we figure on selling the house, moving aboard the boat and traveling. i can take a travel assignment when the cruising kitty gets low or to have health insurance. and he'll work at west marine whenever we're in port to get a discount on sailboat parts! after 3 years of travel nursing, i should be able to retire at age 62 and live somewhere we don't have to worry about health insurance.
