I almost danced for joy when I successfully placed a 26 gauge IV in the threadlike scalp vein of a septic preemie on the first stick and it flushed without blowing!!!!!:roll

Steve that is an awesome accompolishment!
I saw only 3 HH patients today. One is a very nice man with a mother who is like a vicious pit bull. He has awful bedsores at 52 years of age. He came home from a NH several months ago, is a quad with HIV. Anyway I hate dealing with his Mom. I called to let them know I was coming and was told "well Mama's not here now she'll be back in an hour." I told him I have to come now can't come later. I got there and done with the wound care before Mama got home. I felt a huge relief and felt as though I had accompolished something spectacular. No dealings with Mama this week. He's a 2 x a week pt but later in the week he is going to the wound clinic so I'm done with him until next week. Cheers!

That IS an accomplishment........awesome job!!
For my part, I won a round with an MD on behalf of a resident with chronic pain. The resident had asked the doctor for a change in her pain meds. The resident's daughter had asked the doctor for a change. The facility's former DON had asked the doctor for a change. All to no avail.......MD said No each and every time. Until today, when I faxed my three-pronged approach to dealing with the resident's pain and confusion.......and I got every single thing I asked for.
Now, I just hope it WORKS..........this poor lady has polymyalgia rheumatica and severe osteoporosis, her joints are completely shot, and she's not a candidate for surgery. She needs pain relief, and PRN Tylenol #3 just wasn't cutting it if ya know what I mean.
Not quite....but pretty close. I find it amazing that we can infuse blood and high-flow fluids (20-30ml/hr) into a baby's head vein. It's pretty much hit or miss with those 26ga IV's though. Their lumen is so small they tend to clot as you are advancing them, or you can accidentally place them in the temporal artery....great flashback, but it'll scare you to death when you flush 'em and their whole face blanches........wooooo....that'll never happen to me again. I pretty much had to change my drawers after that one
