WGU RN to BSN Grads/Current Students

Nursing Students Western Governors

Hi, everyone, I have a ? regarding 's competency units. I want to get an idea of how many cu's students have earned in the rn-bsn program for WGU in 1 term. I know of course some students are different-depending on time they have- and I know the minimum is 6 CU's per term. I just want to know how individual stuedents did-6 or more? I'm trying to decide between GCU and WGU. I might have to take 14 classes-my transcript hasn't been reviewed yet. Any info would be helpful! Thanks!

WGU wants you to take 12 CU per term, actually. :) Many of us have completed a LOT of CU's in a 6 month term (I did 50), but 12 is what will be expected of you. It really depends on if you have time to really work at completing the classes as is very self paced and you can go as fast as you can or take it easy. I don't know much about GCU, but I do know it's well liked by those who 'attend', as is WGU.

Thankyou for replying. I honestly was under the impression that it was 6 cu's per term for some reason. anyways how much time did you spend on average studying for the 50 cu's? and how many credits did you transfer over from your adn program or other colleges because I'm only transferring about 68 I think. I just want to get an idea and 50 is a lot!

WGU gives you 50CU credit for being an RN, then there's whatever they give you credit for as far as classes go. I only got credit for 20CU above and over the 50 unit 'RN' credit. As for me, I spent probably 30+ hours/week on school and was able to do the program very quickly. On average, I would guess MOST people take two to three semesters to finish. It really depends on you and how much time you want/are able to spend.

When I did the RN-BSN program, I had 37 CUs. I took my time and did the minimum 12 CUs per semester, and finished in 18 months. I could easily have done it in 6-12 months, but chose not to. At 12 CUs per term, I was doing school work for about 5 hours/week on average when I was actively working on classes, and there were months at a time when I did nothing. If I had consistently did 5 hours/week, EVERY week, I would have been able to finish in less than 12 months.

feartherzRN, how long did it take you to finish the program? 1 term?

3.5 months. But I probably did 30+ hours/week (before and after work AND on weekends). So I worked really hard at it. :)

Wow! That's amazing! I also have 37 CUS to complete and am hoping in can knock it out in 1 term! I start 4-1-16. Thanks for the info!

I know this question is a couple of years old, but I earned 27 credits during my first term in 's RN-to-BSN program. I earned the remaining 7 credits during my second (and last) term.

I know your post is over a year old but were you content with program? I believe I can get up to $2,000/year from my job for reimbursement and have been doing research for RN-BSN online programs. I really need to make a decision quickly but don't want to pay for something that isn't legit. Other posts regarding this RN-BSN option are outdated and the most recent posts haven't given me the info I need.

I keep reading about the biochem course, which makes me nervous.

Also, how are you recognized as a BSN, RN after graduating from the program other than showing them your diploma? (I'm asking because I'm an ADN and on my BON, it shows the college you graduated from in your license profile, and I'm listed as an ADN, RN for now.)

Thank you!

Hi PocketSize

I just got my BSN and I highly recommend . Biochem is biochem, you need it and can take it elsewhere if you want but it has to be before you start in order to transfer. Probably easier and makes more sense to take it at WGU since you're paying for time not credits. It's definitely a legitimate and reputable program and very affordable- approx $3300 for 6 months - you'll need to complete 12 credits per term but if you want to get more done you can without paying more. As far as your BON and your credentials, I'm sure you can update with them. I'm in CT so when I renew my license they ask about current degree, etc. Good Luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Please don't let the biochem scare you, it really wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. Honest.
