Was just about to take the plunge and was alerted that they would not be taking Georgia applicants until further notice. Did anybody else hear about that or know why?

The Georgia BON does not list them as an accredited nursing school in the state of Georgia (dated March 2013). The website states "WGU is currently recruiting students for programs in Southern California, Texas, Florida, Indiana and Utah." and "NOTICE: There will be limited clinical opportunities available in select hospitals in Southern California, Texas, Florida, Indiana and Utah. Because of limited clinical opportunities, this is a highly selective program. Future expansion is planned in all five states and in additional states this year and beyond." It sounds like they haven't started the program yet and have run into a problem with the state getting accredited.

Are you trying to enter the pre-licensure program? If so, the above applies. It is not available yet in Georgia. But if you're trying to enter the BSN completion or MSN program- that would be truly puzzling.

They sent me a message stating that the program is 'under review' by the state of Georgia. I was surprised to hear this because I know people who live here that are enrolled. This is something that recently occurred and according to the message they sent it does not affect students already enrolled. I was interested in the RN-MSN nurse educator track and have been a practicing nurse for 20 years. The verdict is out on when or if the program will re-start and I am heart broken but plan on waiting out the summer. If by September things have not changed, I will choose another program (sigh)

Thank you both for the input.

This is very disturbing as my boyfriend is waiting to find out where his new job is going to relocate us, and one of the options is Atlanta :\\\ I hope they get this changed and you can start soon OP!!

From what I could tell from 's website, it looks like it is suspended for ALL potential GA students (not just nursing)... I can't find any information explaining why, though.

I'm wondering if they're getting ready to roll out a state branded Georgia? Like they have for Indiana, Washington, Tennessee, Texas and Missouri.

That would be my guess. That's a good thing, but will take some time.

A message I got back from the GA board of nursing

The Georgia Board of Nursing does not approve programs which do not lead to initial licensure. Applicants for authorization as an advanced practice nurse must have graduated from an approved nursing education program. O.C.G.A. 43-26-3(1.2) provides the following definition for approved nursing education programs:

'Approved nursing education program' located in this state means a nursing education program approved by the board as meeting criteria established by the board. An 'approved nursing education program' located outside this state means a nursing education program that the board has determined to meet criteria similar to and not less

stringent than criteria established by the board for nursing education programs located in this state. In order to be approved by the board, a nursing education program must be one that is offered by:

(A) A unit of the University System of Georgia accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools;

(B) An institution of the Technical College System of Georgia accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools;

© A nonprofit postsecondary institution of higher education that is accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education; or

(D) A postsecondary institution of higher education that is not accredited in accordance with subparagraph © of this paragraph, but whose curriculum has been determined by the board to meet criteria similar to and not less stringent than criteria established by the board for other approved nursing education programs.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Professional Licensing Boards

As somebody that has an ADN and is currently in the RN-BSN program at I wonder how this would affect me if I ever moved to Georgia. I know my RN would transfer over but would that mean my "BSN" wouldn't count in Georgia?

A BSN is a degree, it has nothing to do with the state board of nursing. They don't confer or have anything to do with degrees, just licenses. Once you obtain the degree, it can never be taken away.

Anyone from Georgia in the RN to bsn at ?
