Black Eye for Nurses

U.S.A. West Virginia

Published

I could not believe what I was hearing on the news from Channel 8 yesterday. A male nurse arrested for sexual assualt on a alert male patient at St. Mary's! It was stated that his particular nurse had a pattern of this type of conduct and it was documented in his personnal file. What were they thinking? I listened and was shocked to hear the patient state that a nun told him he was wrong in his identification of this nurse. Wrong in his description of events. Wow! What a black eye for nurses in W.V. How does this make you feel? Do you think this really happened? What steps do you think the facility could have taken to prevent this incident? Come on people, lets get a discussion going on our state board. We spend time chatting with others on other sites. How about a little input here?

If he had a pattern of this kind of behavior and it was documented, then there's a lot of people that should wind up in court over it. It's the same thing as witnessing abuse, and never reporting it to the state.

(P.S. i'm working on a few theads for the WV forum here)

According to the news report there are 10 documented complaints against this male nurse for misconduct. There will be more on tonights news at 22:00 pm on channel 12 and at 23:00 on channel 8.

My thoughts exactly were "how could this be allowed to continue without intervention from the HN, the facility, the board?" Heads will roll and law suit are going to be filed.

Give me a heads up on what you are working on for the forum. It seems like no one is interested in our issues here in the wild and wonderful state of West Virginia. I am an older nurse and I have seen lots of physician misconduct here but I can honestly say that most of the nurses I have worked with here are kind, concerned for their patients and do a good job.

Which LPN school are you attending?

Well, I live up in the northern part of the state, so I haven't heard anything about this......

Let me first start by saying that I have next to NO respect for the media, so I don't believe much of what I hear on the news.

Now, if what they say is true, then I can't believe that this person wasn't disciplined or fired previously either. Also, if that is the case (the person truly does have a history of sexual misconduct) then I am certain that the facility could be held accountable.

Yes, there is a nursing shortage, but that is not the type of nurses that we need! Also, I just noticed that it's been a couple of days since you've posted about this...has anything else come to light about it?

Boy how do these people slip throught the cracks and a nun defending him for pity's sake...there are alot of wonderful, caring nurses who are both women and men. If this is true, the facility should have done a background check on him. Gadzooks!!! Some nurses are turned down for jobs due to some very stupid reasons and this alledged pervert with documentation of his actions is still allowed to practice as a nurse.... Wow where is the justice??

After all of the hoopla on the news about this male nurse and his actions against patients, there has been no further information given out on the news.

I am feeling a little irrate! The way this story was presented, the facilities represented were desperate for nurses so they hired a questionable nurse, and then proceeded to ignore patient complaints against his actions. The last I heard he was in jail, charges were pending at the board and on the civil level, and another nurse was being investigated for not reporting his actions. Sure I know there are big events happening everyday, but I do think we, as working nurses, need to say don't put out a story without some type of follow up every few weeks. It makes all nurses seem like we cover for bad behaviors on the part of a fellow nurse. Just needed to vent on this one, we all work so hard and try to do our very best for our patients and now we are working under this cloud. It just makes me angry.

:p i am a new nursing student from wv, and am pleased to be from the beautiful state. (anyone who doesn't appreciate our state needs to get over to the beautiful mountains in randolph county) anyways, i am glad to discuss some issues :)

Or check out Pocahontas Co. That's a beautiful area as well.

Thank you ladies for agreeing that our state is indeed lovely and a well kept secret on the east coast. I love being able to go to Babcock or Greenbrier State Forest and not see very many other people. I love Twin Falls and the ride to Marlington is beautiful. But the issue here was the nmedia giving such a negative report on this male nurses allegeded conduct and the hospital administration's turning a blind eye. No mention was made on the board of report to the BON until the second time around when they mentioned another nurse being investigated. Do either of you have any feelings or input on this subject?

I smell ans under-the-rug sweeping, and i would hope that several head would roll for this, since it seems that there were others aware of this guy's behavior.
