what ?? he went home??? ( vent)

Published

i was working as a clinical supervisor over the weekend, and our census dropped. ....i sent home a RN and a CNA asked me if he could go home earlier in the day , i said "yes but later". i wasn't sure i wanted to send him home because that would leave us one CNA for 23 patients and i was hoping during bed board i could pick up a few more patients and keep him. so i never said another word about him going home........... i went to bed board and was told the ER was empty and i told the house supervisor i was going to send home the CNA.......... i went back to the floor and i ask where's so and so? ...... and the unit clerk said " oh he went home??" i said he did?? huh??.. and they said yeah he just left took his stuff and left......... i said ohh kay ..,,,,,, and kept my cool the unit clerk was laughing..,,,,, i was very PO'd to say the least....... i wrote it up saying he just left without my knowledge and gave it to my manager .. i was so mad .. anyway i just wanted to vent.. has anyone lese ever had a nurse or CNA leave and not tell the charge nurse ? or am i the only one? what am i at work chopped liver? i felt very disrespected and told my manager that in my write up of the CNA.... i feel better venting ..

What I'm reading is that you keep making excuses for yourself.

In my opinion, you should have said "no" or "ask me later".

amen to that.. hindsight is 20 /20 .. i must say you are right... but ..... shoulda coulda woulda.... ... well it's out of my hands now...

Personally, I think you're being harsh and unwilling to accept responsibility for your part in what happened. I agree with an earlier poster who said if they heard you say "yes" they would've been out the door.

I honestly see this as a misunderstanding with some fault on both ends, but you're so quick to drop the hammer on this guy! You said he's always asked you before what time he can go, if he can go etc etc. Why wouldn't he have done the same this time? He heard a yes and he bailed--not surprising considering you said people have been caught at the time clock before and told they need to stay after all.

What I'm reading is that you keep making excuses for yourself.

:yeahthat:

In your second post you said maybe it was you.......I agree that there was miscommunication. You said 'yes but later' and then 'I wasn't sure I wanted to send him home because that would leave us one CNA for 23 patients and I was hoping during bed board I could pick up a few more patients and keep him'. It appears to me that since you sent the RN home because the census dropped he had a very real belief that he could go also, so he asked. Obviously he overheard you send the RN home because he said, 'what about me can I go home'.

But what gets me is that you clearly stated that you were trying to pick up more beds so he could stay, but this is after you already said, 'yes but later'. It appears that your intent really wasn't to let him go at all and hence the 'later'. Now when the manager comes and asks what happened, you're a little hard pressed to own up to your own misjudgement and want to fall back on all the activity that was going on on the floor. Are you saying that you were so frazzled you just said anything to make him go away? :uhoh21:

Don't mean to come off in a negative way but @ every mellow suggestion being offered, you come back with a justification. Bottom line, it appears you both were trying to be slick and he jumped before you did. Was it the unit clerk laughing that p***ed you off so much? :( On one hand you're saying, "I'm just the clinical supervisor" and on the other hand you're livid :banghead: that you seem to have no authority. It's very unfortunate, especially so if this CNA gets disciplined over this.

BTW, did that RN that you sent home come back and ask you if you were sure she could go? And what time? After you had already walked away and some time had passed?

... i was intending to let him go.. i really wated to .. but it wasn't going to work out.. yes the RN did come check with me and told me she ws leaving the floor and said goodbye to me... what it boils down to "" he needed to speak to me before he just walked off the hallway.. i am clinical supervisor and i run the hallway for the manager and i have authority as adminstration on the weekends.. and i report to my manager on monday what happens on the hallway .. the CNA should of talked to me before he left... yes he will be written up and allready has....... my manager called me and the CNA admitted to her he was wrong and should of waited for me to get out of bed board that i should have been notified of any changes on the floor....... thats all i wanted to hear... he and i will have a talk on friday when i come in........ like i said just let me know your intentions...... my manager told me that the CNA's will have a wipe board that i will keep track of when they come and go for lunch and when they leave for breaks... i spoke with my manager at great length this afternoon and she made me feel much better. she said i have every right to ask the staff to let me know when they leave the building and floor.... i did not get a break or a lunch that day so i yes i was exhausted and i wasn't perfect but i am human.....

as for the unit clerk laughing .. he thought it was funny i was the..last to know..... he probably was a frazzled as much as i was... i will not be posting anymore on this .. the matter is resloved and i appreciate all your thoughts and suggestions , i love and respect you all... i will check you out on other posts .. thank you all !! :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

I don't know Robin, sounds like a pi**ing match to me. I wonder how it wasn't gonna work out when you were on your way to tell him to go home? I thought I read that you told the house supervisor that you were sending him home. I honestly thought he made his intentions pretty clear....he wanted and asked to go home.

I do agree that he should have informed you that he was leaving even though you didn't post that you specifically asked him to do so. Your supervisor said you have every right to ask staff to inform you when leaving and you being in charge I agree, however, in this case you didn't ask him to do so. I just don't see the intent being unclear on his behalf, yours yes, but not his. :twocents:

No need for you to post on this anymore, it seems like you got the desired response from both manager and CNA :yeah:This day is done and we've all had them. I'm sure you're kicking back and getting some very well deserved 'me time' Enjoy! :icon_hug:

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

After I posted I saw the situation had already been resolved. :)

i told him later , but never gave him the" you can go" ... he's been a employee there for a long time and he knows he pulled a fast one.. he knows to check with me first,,,, he just left ... maybe it was me.. but he knows better... i don;t know ... he knows you have to wait for the clinical supervisor to let you go... and that was me.. grrrr

Say what you mean, and mean what you say. You gave him an ambiguous 3 word statement, which he chose to interpret the way he wanted.

I'm going to be quite honest and frank here, without having read the other replies. Based on your ability to type and express yourself in a paragraph, it is in my opinion that your communication skills are lacking. I'm not saying this to be mean. I'm saying this to prove my upcoming point. It seems to me that this CNA simply misunderstood you (which was most likely the case). You, then, translated it as an act of defiance (completely unbeknownst to him), which then precipitated that all too familiar write-up slip, which should be nick named "When Nurses Attack Nurses." All of that wihtout even talking to one another first.

YOUR CONDUCT WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS!

Why would you even tell him later? It sounds like you really didn't want to let him go home.

I'm trying to figure out what the heck this is suppose to even mean? You seem rather immature to be in a supervisory position. I hope you are more mature and professional in real life.
