i was working as a clinical supervisor over the weekend, and our census dropped. ....i sent home a RN and a CNA asked me if he could go home earlier in the day , i said "yes but later". i wasn't sure i wanted to send him home because that would leave us one CNA for 23 patients and i was hoping during bed board i could pick up a few more patients and keep him. so i never said another word about him going home........... i went to bed board and was told the ER was empty and i told the house supervisor i was going to send home the CNA.......... i went back to the floor and i ask where's so and so? ...... and the unit clerk said " oh he went home??" i said he did?? huh??.. and they said yeah he just left took his stuff and left......... i said ohh kay ..,,,,,, and kept my cool the unit clerk was laughing..,,,,, i was very PO'd to say the least....... i wrote it up saying he just left without my knowledge and gave it to my manager .. i was so mad .. anyway i just wanted to vent.. has anyone lese ever had a nurse or CNA leave and not tell the charge nurse ? or am i the only one? what am i at work chopped liver? i felt very disrespected and told my manager that in my write up of the CNA.... i feel better venting ..
True, but that is in the past. What matters now is how this is going to play out in the future and it doesn't look like the CNA is going reap benefits from this.
he isn't .. he is in for a write up and counseling and hopefully he won't be turned into the board... he knew better , he knows to always check with me and you don't leave with out talking to me first... i can meet you at the time clock and say " your not leaving" and you have to stay. my response at that time may have been correct but i am in charge of that floor and yo better not leave inless you clear it with me first... if i'm vague you double check.. i am busy and it dosen't hurt to ask me.. he has his agenda and he left while i was off the floor , not telling me.... bad... i think that made me mad most of all.. just tell me .. ask .. he sees me coding a patient , the having a rapid response and running off the floor to MRI .. i am busy and human and i forget ... so ask me.. give me that much respect...
I think you should cut him a break on this and assume he misunderstood you. Yeah, I think he played the situation to his benefit but unless he is someone that does it all the time I would assume my failure to responds clearly was at least particially responsible for what happen. In the future, try to be clearer. As a management person it is your know you have to be clear and specific or it will go wrong.
I'm wondering...are CNA's subject to charges of "Patient Abandonment" like nurses are if they leave without permission?
gee i don't know.. i hope it dosen't come to that... i just think some counseling will do... ya know .. check with me first... just ask ... and we move on... i don;t know about that... i don't even know if he gave report to the other cna before he left... i heard he left i got mad for a few minutes then bam my crazy patient in the camera room threw his bedside table at the wall.. i have never seen meatballs fly that far... splat... so i had other things to think about ... i knew i should of stayed in bed yesterday...
I think you should cut him a break on this and assume he misunderstood you.
can't do that i have to justify to the manager why he left at 1500 .. she asked why he left early... i have to justify anyone who leaves through the house supervisor and my manager.... we count every hour... i had to do a write up and had to meet with the manager this morning.... i am just a clinical supervisor.. i am not the manager .. i run the floor on the weekends... i don't count hours and i have to explain why i let people go and why to many people stayed....

oramar you are a fair minded person... yes he took advantage ... but he has in the past by taking an hour for lunch and other things , i was as clear as i could be at that moment .. i was very busy and you always need to ask to double check , he always asked me before " what time can i go" can i go now?" this time you are correct he took advantage... but i need to account for everyone.... the manager told me if there was ever a fire or a hospital lockdown i wouldn't know where he was and i would be crazy with worry .. and i could get in trouble for not knowing where he was... no i have no control if it happens i sing like a bird i have a manager that i need to report to....
Personally, I think you're being harsh and unwilling to accept responsibility for your part in what happened. I agree with an earlier poster who said if they heard you say "yes" they would've been out the door.
I honestly see this as a misunderstanding with some fault on both ends, but you're so quick to drop the hammer on this guy! You said he's always asked you before what time he can go, if he can go etc etc. Why wouldn't he have done the same this time? He heard a yes and he bailed--not surprising considering you said people have been caught at the time clock before and told they need to stay after all.

i don't think i'm being harsh at all. i had patients that needed to be cared for... the patients are the ones who suffer .. now if the charge nurse came to me early on the shift and said " hey robin you can leave early today" i'd say great , she gets busy and i just walk out , without taking any responsibiltiy and asking " are you sure it's okay for me to go now?" what time should i leave? and i just stroll out not even telling her i was gone ... i would be in deep dooda.... i am quick to drop the hammer yes i am .. because i deserve to know when he is going and why he didn't ask me...i am in charge and i am a human and you need to tell me whene you leave.. let me know.. come talk to me... no i am not harsh... i want to know where you are during my shift... just because i am coding someone or running to mri or tryig to calm a insane man ... come see me.. i am there i am approachable and ask me.... i have other focuses... remind me.. say can i go home??
Maybe the first thing to do after you talk to the manager about it, is talk to him (with the manager present)!
i am very happy to do this... because then i can explain in person what went wrong... and if i am busy and i tell you something... follow up with me... ask me... he is a adult , and he can open his mouth and talk to me... ask me... i've been a nurse for 25 years now... he knows the protocol... i was very busy and had other things i was doing... if your a adult you check with me...
