i was working as a clinical supervisor over the weekend, and our census dropped. ....i sent home a RN and a CNA asked me if he could go home earlier in the day , i said "yes but later". i wasn't sure i wanted to send him home because that would leave us one CNA for 23 patients and i was hoping during bed board i could pick up a few more patients and keep him. so i never said another word about him going home........... i went to bed board and was told the ER was empty and i told the house supervisor i was going to send home the CNA.......... i went back to the floor and i ask where's so and so? ...... and the unit clerk said " oh he went home??" i said he did?? huh??.. and they said yeah he just left took his stuff and left......... i said ohh kay ..,,,,,, and kept my cool the unit clerk was laughing..,,,,, i was very PO'd to say the least....... i wrote it up saying he just left without my knowledge and gave it to my manager .. i was so mad .. anyway i just wanted to vent.. has anyone lese ever had a nurse or CNA leave and not tell the charge nurse ? or am i the only one? what am i at work chopped liver? i felt very disrespected and told my manager that in my write up of the CNA.... i feel better venting ..

Maybe he thought you said he could go home, later, since you said "yes but later" when later arrived? Other than that, if he didn't tell his manager, and didn't tell you, and just left, I would think there should be some consequences--whatever your facility's policy is....
i told him later , but never gave him the" you can go" ... he's been a employee there for a long time and he knows he pulled a fast one.. he knows to check with me first,,,, he just left ... maybe it was me.. but he knows better... i don;t know ... he knows you have to wait for the clinical supervisor to let you go... and that was me.. grrrr

All I would've heard was the word "yes," and I'd have been running for the door!
Chalk it up to a miscommunication. Next time be very clear that no one goes anywhere without a definite answer within a specified time frame from you.
Initiate consequences according to policy...and be prepared for him to act out about it...and be careful in the future that you only say exactly what you mean..
If you don't, the future is set for more of the same...
This time, he could argue that you said yes, though, even though you didn't clearly say absolutely yes, so you might not win the logical consequences argument....
(I like ...s it seems...)

well he can act out all he wants i was actually worried about that myself, the manager said she may just go to all RN's anyway and if there is any trouble she can hire another CNA at the drop of a hat... i don't think we will have CNA's much longer ... if it was a miscommunication and he wasn't sure he should of waited 20 minutes for me to get out of bed board and ask .. not just leave... if your not sure of something you wait and ask you don't just leave... i was very busy that day and i had a rapid response and a code and alot of family pt problems and a wild legal patient ( it was crawzy) .. he knows better than to just leave... thank you soo much you have me looking at this from another angle... you are awesome !!

You learned the hard way that some people will try to get you to say what they want to hear by approaching you when they know you cannot possibly focus on their question. Sure, he got away with a fast one, but in the end, he only harmed himself by clearly showing his colors - lack of integrity and caring. Furthermore, I know, in the future, your first answer will be "no" - you can always change it after you had an opportunity to evaluate the situation.

If you did not know if you were going to let him go home, you should have never even said yes at all.
I think you both failed at communicating effectively and are both at fault.

is it possible that since you said "yes, but later" he took it to mean that when he was done with his duties he could go? Maybe he thought everything he had to do was done and headed for the hills... (and everything that he thought was done maybe wasn't but...)

True, but that is in the past. What matters now is how this is going to play out in the future and it doesn't look like the CNA is going reap benefits from this.
could be... but later is so vague.. i wasn't sure myself as of yet but was so busy , he asked me at a busy time i was transferring a pt to the unit .. he said ' what about me can i go home' and i said " yes later" but his duties weren't done and he didn't ask me " what time do i leave? or can i leave? i was so busy i forgot he even asked , he had many chances to bring it up again , but he just left... he has been employed at the hospital for years and knows he cannot leave until you talk to me... i never gave a time and got busy he never brought it up again... and he just left.. you just can't leave.. .. he waited until i left for bed board and walked out.. he could of asked " can i go home now?" right before bedboard i had a rapid response in MRI i needed to go to and was off the floor , so i didn't see him....... he could of waited for me after i got out of bed board and asked to be sure... many times at the hospital it is not clear until the moment you can go. i have been told the same thing " you can go home in awhile" and them bam the ER fills up and i stay ( dissapointment ).. i would never leave until i get the word or i ask the charge nurse...,,,,,, he is not new to this game and always wants to go home early.. he asks at 0730 " can i go home?" ... his reputation at the hospital is " he always goes home early" ..... if he wasn't sure on the time or if he didn't understand he should of asked me... he knows this.....
not true... i can change my mind at any given time to send someone home or not. i have been told yes i could go home and then have it rescinded as i was getting ready to go home. nope ... i can change my answer on the turn of a dime.. nothing is written in stone ... one charge nurse changed from yes to no went to time clock and got the nurse and brought her back... nothing is oiffical until i say " go leave now" and you had better go quick because you will stay.. i told " later " that dosen't mean when you feel like it.... i am in charge of the floor and yo check with me before you walk out that door.... you ask me .. can i go now? or what time can i go? not leave while i am in bed board....
