Weird/ Dumb Nursing School Rules

Published

At ********* we weren't allowed to wear flip flops, shorts, or even have facial hair! If I came to clinical with even a little stubble, I would have to shave or go home.

Anyone else have rules in nursing school that you didn't agree with?

Part of being an adult. The school/employer may set any rules they decide. It is up to you whether those rules are a deal breaker or if you will comply with them. I work with many people who have visible tattoos. The dress code was recently revised (although it did always state that visible tattoos had to be covered) and it is now being strictly enforced. Most of those people chose to comply with the rules, either by wearing long sleeve scrub jackets or by purchasing a tattoo sleeve cover. It's not going to end when you graduate school.

Two things.

One, ****** follows some very strict rules about what students can wear to class. It's all part of the Honor Code. Since *** is a private school, they can set more restrictive rules, and if people don't like them, than tough. Either deal or leave.

Second, using your real name in your user name is very risky.

Wow, I bet you knew this before enrolling. It's very common knowledge within the LDS community.

You are getting VERY cheap tuiton by being a church member. You need to suck it up and quit complaining. Or go to a different school.

Hey, I already graduated. I knew about the rules, and I am venting now that I am done!

Well, I don't know anyone that would agree with you. You're on your own there Randy.

Agree with what exactly? Also, I understand the professionalism that comes with nursing. I'm not trying to sound ungrateful for my education, I was just trying to see if anyone empathized with me in this situation. I guess not. Sorry! :)

It's one thing to dress like a frump when you're in your pre-reqs. But nursing school is serious & the most respected profession. Why would they ever let you to go to class in flip flops & shorts? Nursing school is the nursing profession on steroids. They have rules for a reason, you're taking care of people's lives!

No nurses are going to agree with you on the the fact that you think those rules are bs. It's not gonna happen. Maybe a pre-nursing student will agree with you.

ICUman,

I didn't know about these specific rules before enrolling, just the main stuff like no girls sleeping over, no drinking, etc. My main problem was with the facial hair. I think that a little stubble or even a moderate amount of facial hair can still look professional. I ended up sticking with it because it made sense financially. Obviously I didn't make it clear that I am done with school there or you wouldn't be telling me to "suck it up" (I thought speaking in past-tense would be enough).

Sorry for the negativity OP. I think your post generated a bit more hostility than you intended. I'm all for a rant-about-nursing school post!

I remember sitting in my program's orientation and rolling my eyes a little when they told us we had to wear professional business clothes to class. No one did. We also wore sandals and flip flops and shorts.

Obviously we dressed the part for clinical. I understand the facial hair rule somewhat, but I know facial hair is important in some religions and customs. So it may be a bit outdated. I actually and personally think those lanyards nurses wear are way more gross than facial hair. Pathogens!!

I disliked almost everything about my nursing program except for being at the bedside. I'm glad that organizational nightmare is over.

Toodles!

Organized Chaos LVN,

Sorry, I threw in the shorts and flip flops for the girls (my legs and feet are too white to want to do that!). But anyway, I think that if its 90 degrees outside, a girl should be able to wear something comfortable (this applies to all students there, not just nursing). I know my wife and other female students who brought this up which is why I am now.

ICUman,

BS. It's made clear beforehand. And yes I'm still telling you to suck it up, it could have been a lot worse, and you're finished. There's no point in trying to make the school look bad.
