wearing nurse memorabilia before becoming a nurse?

Published

My stepmom is a big gifter. Lately she's taken to picking up nursing memorabilia for me. She bought me a thermos that says 'Keep Calm I'm a Nurse.' It's adorable but she wants to know why I never use it or any of the other stuff she buys. I explained to her that I'm not a nurse yet and wearing/using stuff that implies i am makes me feel fraudulent. Anyone else feel that way?

I wouldn't want other people to know that I am a paramedic outside of work or a call and when I am a nurse I won't want them to know either. As nice as it is, you really don't want people to expect medical advice from you. If strangers sniff a nurse out a mile away, they will want you to look at every cut, bruise, bump, etc. They will want you to know what you think of their lady partsl discharge or if you think they should get their headache checked out.[/quote']

I agree! I don't advertise that I'm a nurse while I'm out. But you better believe I have a cute little nursing mug that I use at home to drink my tea in!

Just save it then use when you do become a nurse. Otherwise it's like wearing a marine corpmshirt right when you enter boot camp

My mom gave me a nurse Christmas ornament when I was in LPN school, I wouldn't put it on my tree till I graduated and passed my boards. I told her she could see it the next Christmas.

I took my boards July 2nd found out I passed on the 4th, and my mom passed away suddenly on July 8th.

I didn't want to jinx anything either. I wonder if I should of hung it so she could see it.

I would of never wore anything with nurse on it before I became a nurse

Ps

An LPN is a nurse

I think this feeling varies. I feel like being a nurse isn't just my job it's my calling. I can't just stop being one when I go home no matter what. So I'll be that person with a license plate with a nurse related thing on it, and wear a sweat shirt that says something on it too. I do own and wear "Student Nurse" things already from my school. In December I'll graduate and pass the boards and then I will BE a nurse forever in my heart.

My friends and family already ask questions LOL! I have other medical people in my family and never had a total stranger ask them something so I think I'll take my chances with it ;)

^My condolences. Your mom was able to see you succeed, and you have that reminder in that ornament.

And I agree, as a former LPN for many moons, we ARE nurses

Personally it bugs me when people wear nursing program sweatshirts before they're in the program. Same goes for other nurse chotchkes. I know a person with a stethoscope tattoo who wasn't in the program (or any program), guess what, they don't want to be a nurse anymore, and that ink is forever.

I agree re wearing program attire

I wore program attire but that was when I was actually in program. On my off days, I don't advertise that I am a nurse when I'm out and about. I do have some nurse mugs that I use while I'm at home or at work.

When I found out I got into my program, my aunt gave me a thermos that says TLC in Training, and beneath that it says Student Nurse...I think stuff like that is ok to use. If it just said nurse on it, I would wait to use it though.
