So I plan on graduating nursing school in May 2010 in NY (with my BSN and a previous B.S. in Human Biology) and I am looking to possibly move to the washington d.c area, I'm hoping by that time the economy has bounced back and more places are hiring. I was wondering if people could tell me about the hospitals in the city or surrounding area and the starting salary and whatever other fun/useful facts you may know. Thanks!

Washington Hospital Center is $27.673 for new graduate (someone with less than one year of experience). I think their new graduate rate is the highest in the region. Several other hospitals pays around $25 per hour.

Shift differential is 20% permanent evening and 25% permanent night. But if you don't commit to the shift, it's 10% evening and 15% night.

I think they have the better rate since it's a union

wow thats an amazing shift differential, do ya know if you do 12 hr days or 12 hour nights does it break it up as all 12 hr shift differential for nights, or is it 4 hr evening and 8 hr night? and same thing with days/evening? I was worried i wouldnt be able to afford to live there but with the differentials i think i could make it work :)

Sibley Memorial Hospital starts at $24/hr, but for new grads who pass their new grad program, they offer a $15,000 stipend (basically a taxed scholarship) that can be used on anything. Seems like a solid place to work with lots of support for the nurses - at least in the critical care departments.

WHC pays shift differentials according to this beakdown. 7-3 days, no differential.

3-11, evening shift differential, 11p -7a, night shift differential. All new grads have to work rotating shifts (except OR,etc for obvious reasons). You can only get permanent nights after at least a year. Good luck on getting permanent days, there are probably 10 senior nurses in front of you for that spot.

Thanks, im looking for permanent nights most-likely, not that i mind the day shift, but i think for job security purposes and because Ill be a new nurse there will be more opportunities if i go nights at first. you get to sleep during the day while everyone else is at work, so its not like you are missing out on anything ya know

Georgetown University Hospital pays its new grads 26.52/hr plus 15% differential for evenings and nights (anytime after 3pm) and 25% on weekends. You rotate and do half nights, half days and every third weekend. Shifts are 12 hr.

Howard University Hospital 30/hr and its unionized unlike most DC hospitals
