I am a school nurse in southern Maine with 20+ years school nursing experience. Looking for some input from school nurses in warmer winter weather states (Florida, Arizona, Carolina's etc) as to the job market in your state for experienced school nurses (who are really tired of being cold) Thanks!! Keep Warm:)

I live in Florida. School nurse jobs here are very rare for the obvious reasons. I've been at my school for six years, and can count on one hand how many vacancies there have been. If a job does become vacant, usually it's taken by an internal candidate who wants to move closer to home, or whatever reason they may have. The last time I saw a job actually posted on line was mine!
Sorry!!

I am in the sunny south! (Georgia). I love my position here. In our county every school has a school nurse. My school has 450 students, but some schools have up to 1500. The pay is not great (we are paid about the same as a new nurse) but time is money as far as I am concerned and the benefits are great. I think you would have a great chance of getting a position. (I was hired on with no school nursing experience.) Typically, the positions open up at the end of the year. If a position does not come available, you can apply for a clinic sub position and you are pretty much guaranteed a position if you are good!
And, I was in Maine in September (wearing a coat) and was missing my shorts and tank tops! Maine was beautiful, though!! probably wouldn't be much of a fan during winter...

I'm in Tampa and have a school nurse interview coming up but can't remember if someone said being a school nurse was hard with the elementary kids or the older ones. I think they said the little kids was better. I love sweet little kids so maybe that would be best lol.

I live in Lakeland, Florida. I always see jobs posted for LPN's on the school district website.
